Starring Robert Downey, Jr. as Holmes and Jude Law
as Watson. I … I just can’t tell. Downey does seem
to do the gentlemanly bipolarism thing well… but the
trailer looks like they might have gone the “Wild Wild
West” route…
Obviously a farce, I saw no Deerstalker.
Yeah, it looks like a farce. Zombie Jeremy Brett will have to come back and kick them both in the head.
On the other hand, Iron Man gave me an enormous respect for Robert Downey Jr., and I’m now willing to believe that the could pull off anything. Before that I thought he was basically Jeff Goldblum with a drug problem, and wow was I wrong. He pulled off one of the best superhero movies ever made, so why not go after Sherlock Holmes?
I say this as someone who has bought the full DVD Granada series and even show the Dancing Men to my cryptography class if we have a spare moment by the end of the semester.
[Edit: Not to spoil anything, but according to IMDB one of the characters is “The Woman,” Irene Adler. I hope this isn’t just a superficial and sophomoric mashup of existing characters.]
Ummmm, riiiiiiiiight…
I’ve been reading Holmes since I was 13 yr old (more years than I care to contemplate) and I’ve decided that the best way to approach Sherlock Holmes movies is almost always to look at them as if they were about a completely different character with the same name. That way I can often enjoy them in their own right as good (or not) mysteries or adventures. This new one might be good fun if looked at in that way. As a “real” Sherlock Holmes story, it looks pretty bogus.
For me, Jeremy Brett was THE film Holmes. He captured just about every nuance of the character, the bad along with the good. The writers of that series had the good sense to use genuine Conan Doyle stories and even lift big chunks of actual dialogue from the original stories. Wonderful stuff.

I don’t know if I can go that new one… ![]()
As an avid Doyle fan, and even more avid Holmes fan and Jeremy Brett devotee, I’ll be approaching this will some small degree of scepticism, however, that’s more or less how I also approached Star Trek, which I loved.
I won’t set myself up to be let down, but that doesn’t stop me from being excited about it either. Like many others, Iron Man gave me a new respect for the acting abilities of Downey Jr. I’m fairly confident I won’t have my “fan-bone” offended by him.
RD Jr is da bomb, but I’m not sure he’s Sherlock Holmes.
