hi after some of your messages,about not starting on a low whistle first ..ive decided to lay it down 4 a while and buy a standard d to learn on first..the local music shop as a shaw conical with a wooden fipple priced 4 £12.50

If you do a ‘search’ for Shaw D at the top you’ll find hundreds of posts about Mr Shaw’s whistles, including some from myself.
When I bought it, I hated it. Loathed it. But after buying and playing a Shaw low D I find I’m liking the high D better every day.
Personally, I’d get something like a Generation D or a Faedog D, or a Clarke’s Sweetone to begin with (or even a Clarke’s Original if you prefer the wooden fipple-plug style). They’ll set you back anywhere between 2.99 and 4.99.
Once you’ve got a few tunes under yer belt you then might like to think about spending more money and going “up market” (as soon as you’re afflicted by WhOA). Although many of the best players stick with the ‘cheap’ whistles they bought yonks ago and still sound a lot better than I ever will.
There’re loads of reviews of any number of whistles on this site. I think the last thing you need to be worrying about as a beginner is the substantial breath requirement of the Shaw, and the amount of wind you have to push for the second octave above G2. With the other whistles I mentioned, you won’t have that problem and can concentrate on simply learning to play (which isn’t that simple, really!).

I’ve often wondered what I’d recommend as a first whistle. Although it’s rather quiet, and needs more breath than some, I’d recommend a Clarke Original. It’s not too loud, and has a decent sound. The Clarke Sweetone comes in second because most of them have a rather plain sound.

hi, again i think i might get a clarke as well i think its good idea to have a couple at the begining so u can compare and not blame the one whistle everytime and not urself 
i really like the look of the older shape…a couple of friends have tryed the shaw and said i got lucky even so the mouthpeice is slightly offline 
they said it played nice aj
