Shamrock Shakes

I was reminded today why I have voluntarily avoided them for the last 20 years…major grossness. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah, sometimes you have to eat something really icky as sort of a booster shot.

I don’t even ever go to McDonald’s as a rule for the most part, but I made an exception since I took one of the Izzlets shoe shopping, and she hadn’t had lunch. I’m still feeling rather queasy over the whole thing, and I only drank 1/3 of it.

McD’s isn’t alowed to call them “milk shakes” here, just “shakes”, because they are not made with real milk, but rather modified vegetable oils.

We don’t call them “milk shakes” here either. I would assume for the same reason, but I could very well be wrong. Either way, they’re nasty.

No, you’re right. That’s why they’re just “shakes.”
There is no comparison between one of those things and an actual milk shake from an actual ice cream place.

One of the guys I used to work with texted us at work today to say “Shamrock Shakes are Back!” Got me in the mood for a shake…so I did the smart thing and went to Stewart’s for a nice REAL mint chocolate chip milkshake. Yum.

I haven’t had a shamrock shake in years but I remember it didn’t taste nearly as good as it sounds.

Now the Milk Bottle in Spokane - there’s a place to get wonderful milkshakes!

Youngest, 16, begs to differ… she got one yesterday and very much enjoyed it. I got an iced mocha, myself, and it actually tasted as if they had used real coffee!! LOL!

They can keep all the rest of their offerings, though!

My 14 year old loved hers as well. You must have to have young taste buds or something :stuck_out_tongue:

Apparently their coffee is pretty good these days. But I am so rarely in there, I wouldn’t know. Was yours good at least?

At this moment, I’m listening to the Bothys first..nice is not the word,

Awesome …again.

Slan,
D,

that has nothing to do with shamroak shakes, dub

True…

Wow…it’s been ages since I thought of the old Milk Bottle. Another great place for shakes (and for ice cream in general) was Doyles, but I believe they’ve gone out of business.

In Santa Cruz, the one place for all things ice cream is Marianne’s.

Redwolf

bleeping thread hijacker… :stuck_out_tongue:

This reminds me that I need to research what’s up with Dairy Queen. There is a Mom & Pop soft serve ice cream drive thru that tastes so much better. One of the food additives that really grosses me out is Guar Gum. It’s almost tolerable when an item is fresh but disgusting with something that’s been around awhile.

Yes, McD’s coffee is pretty good now. Some stores don’t seem to be using the “new” coffee, though. I think the iced coffee is great, but the quality control on them isn’t too good.

Some stores routinely use too much ice, just like they give you a cup packed with cubes and almost no drink. I’ve also gotten a few that appeared to have been made with decaf. One was made with milk, I think, rather than whatever creamer they use.

I dislike the flavors (caramel, vanilla, etc.) and the liquid sugar, but others seem to love the stuff. It’s too sweet and tastes of chemicals.

My preference is for plain iced coffee, no creamer/no sugar, or for iced coffee with creamer, but no sugar. And not a lot of ice.

I’m not familiar with iced coffee. I would not trust anything coming from McD’s. It’s more likely to be some form of coagulated, modified vegetable oils with an artificial coffee flavour.

Do you have any favourite recipes for iced coffee?

djm

There are a few ways to do iced coffee, most of them are very bad.

My favorite method is what’s called Japanese Iced Coffee, where you just brew a more concentrated coffee over ice. It takes a little bit to get your parameters correct for that, but you preserve the flavor profile of the coffee.

Easiest / awesomest way is Toddy. Grind 1 lb of coffee, fairly coarse (think French Press), put in Toddy with room temperature water up to the line, leave it alone for 12 hours, pull the plug. You get a good bit of coffee concentrate. Mix it about 1/3 coffee to 2/3 cold water + ice and you get some really lovely, low-acidity iced coffee. Because the Toddy makes a really low-acid cup, I’d recommend darker roast coffees.

I refuse to comment on McDonald’s coffee or their silly McCafe commercials.

I will say this: I have never had good coffee at a restaurant. I have been to very snooty, fine-dining places, and the coffee is invariably mediocre. Why doesn’t anyone care about decent coffee?
