I dunno…it seems to me, (because of my line of work I have a concealed weapons permit ((now I know I’ve earned myself some instant enemies 
))) that common sense would dictate that if you wanted to carry a firearm, for whatever reason, you would want to be proficient with it…
Well, we don’t know at this point if the woman was a ‘target’ or a victim of poor aim. In fact, there’s a lot we don’t know - such as the story about Mr. Sipel being attacked with a knife the previous day.
The sad part is that one is dead, the other hospitalized, and Mr. Sipel’s productive life most likely at and end (he’s charged with murder, so we have to wait and see how the self-defense issue works out).

The treatment of returning Iraq veterans, for both medical and psychiatric issues, is a priority for the VA. Psychiatric treatment for PTSD is easily obtained, but the veteran has to want it and show up for it. Enrollment in a live-in type of program may not occur instantly, but treatment on an outpatient basis should be readily available.
You can still get them on the second hand market, I would be willing to bet that he already had one at home before he got back…
even if it was a semi-auto, it’s not hard to modify older “civie” models into autos. (Yes I know how, and no I wont tell you )
Quite alright. If second hand assault rifles are that easy to obtain then I’m sure the mods are too.
Yes, I’m sorry to say…thankfully the only people I know with modified autos only did it for kicks and eventually got bored with them.
Even though my political leanings are very near center, I was at one point in time a gun nut… I dont have many now, just the Walther I carry and another in a quick-palm safe that I leave home for my wife.

what exactly was the weapon he used? The term “assault” rifle is thrown around pretty much by the media (as is semi-automatic - this city defines anything that can take a 10 clip or more a semi-automatic, and I certainly don’t think of a .22 that can take a 10 clip as a semi- auto) and I’m just wondering what exactly he was carrying.
(not saying it was right or that this wasn’t a tragedy…)
Should being the operative word. In truth, a lot of the VA Centers are overwhemed, don’t have the funds to help everyone and are severely limting the amount of counseing a vet can get.
Not to mention that there is sort of a stigma for military personnel when they seek psychological counseling.
I’m not saying that the DOD does not want to help, just that it’s not always easy.
