SF Tionol

Re a question posed by Fel in another post…

Uhm… re the SF tionol…I’ll be looking for “dates” by then…whenever it is.

We’re not so sure at the moment. There are a multitude of issues affecting the tionol plans this year. They include: money, location, money, manpower, money, pregnancy, money, divorce, money, lack of interest, money, venues, money, guest pipers, money, relocation of one of our own to Ireland, money, relocation of one of our own to England, money, move of one of our own to Ireland for studies, and …money.

We are unclear as to whether the tionol would be well atended. How about a show of electronic hands?

We have discussed hosting an informal pipers gathering…sort of a place and day to get all the locals and anyone else who would want to come together for the day followed by a concert of sorts or just a pipers chair event. On the other hand, we may go with a full fledged tionol. It all depends on interest. What say ye?

You can be sure of a good turn out from the Southern Californian contingent anyway.

Pat.

Are you implying that some of those lovely ladies in SoCal would come to NorCal to be my dates? Or, are you implying that some of you who are pipers in SoCal would come to our tionol? Or, both?

I’m definitely there. I’ll do my best to get Monsieur Hubbert there as well.

Can’t speak for the ladies, but the usual rabble from SoCal will turn up, as long as there’s drink.

I could be convinced to attend…

I’m in! Gotta get my Zachary’s pizza fix

Hey there,

I’m planning on coming down as usual, and am pretty sure that there will be at least a few bodies from the Seattle area. Keep us posted on the plans. I’ll try to get a better head count from these parts.

Cheers,

Rod

Yeah, um, I guess I would be the pregnancy issue, but from what I hear we are having some planning issues since most of our regular planning types are not going to be around. So we are thinking of doing something a bit more informal this time, maybe just a big ragin’ party and a concert?

I of course will be there but I will probably be in the same boat that I was in at the last SF Tionol, that is, spending the whole tionol nursing a newborn and changing diapers. (Oh, and chasing a toddler at the same time). :astonished:

Congrats to you two! Larry, I’ll be sure to provide some authentic Boonville brew as drink incentive for you guys. I hope this ends up being a full fledged tionol. I’d really love to get down to sf for the meetings, but gas prices are killer and pipemaking apprentice wages are quite modest.

Hey- congratulations!!! My offer still stands to make sure your Rogge set is in playable condition

I’m in and would be willing to offer my home in Santa Cruz as a location understanding of course that SC is about 1 hour 15 minutes from SF if there is no traffic

OK…so don’t shoot me yet, but…some constructive criticism.

This questioning of when and where the SF Tionol will be held brings up some discussion.

I feel the problem with the SF Tionol is that it is usually very unorganized.
Nobody knows what is going on until the last minute.

When people take time, money, and travel some distance for an event, the least they want is an organized event and an agenda of the daily events for their money and time spent. Gas and planes fares are more expensive than every these days.

Look at the SoCal Club Tionols as an example of well planned events, (you can thank me later Paddy) with great pre-planning and follow up.

I attended a Tionol in another state one time and it was not a good experience. Too many venues spread all over the city. It was very difficult for me and my friend that attended with me to get around.

Also, since most people have traveled there and usually don’t have local transportation, all the events should be localized at the same venue.

I stopped attending mostly because of these reasons.

I used to travel to SF for the monthly meetings, but found it a waste of time because they were ill attended and not a lot happened there. I don’t need to drive to SF for a drink. Maybe this has changed since I haven’t been in a while.

Yes, I know…if I was there that would be one more person attending, but…I kept going for some time and only 3 or 4 people were showing up.

Tionols need to be planned events with some draw, like great teachers and a great venue.

I don’t mean to sound upset, because I am not. I just want to see a renewal of the San Francisco Club of the past. Perhaps we need to charge more for dues and attending the Tionol if money is an issue?

I will attend the SF Tionol this year in any event. I am hoping that it is IN San Francisco.

Also…why are the West Coast Tionols held in February? It is cold and raining. Is it supposed to feel like Ireland? How about May when the weather is pleasant?

Let the flames begin…

Slainte! Richard

So when can we shoot you?

I like your ideas, Richard. Maybe you’d be willing to organize the tionol? We need someone to step up and make it happen…

Well Bob…

I would be willing to help out.

I think we need to get together and come up with a plan first.

Maybe we could have an informal get together with all the finest SF area pipers and see what can be done to put together a really well organized Tionol.

Give me a call or email me and we can set up a time and place to meet up.

I really feel our biggest problem is that living in California, we are all so spread out in distance, it is difficult for all of us to get together on a regular basis. Anywhere we meet, someone has to travel at least 50 miles it seems.

I live in Los Gatos now. C.B. Hannegan’s pub is a block away and they would be more than happy to see a bunch of pipers drop by.

I have a lot of ideas I would love to share.

I was just kidding about being shot at!

Cheers! Richard

Allright folks, its time we have a serious meeting and “fish or cut bait.”

The next “Sunday go to Meetin’” SF Irish Pipers club meeting is to be held at my place on Sunday October 12 at 2PM.

We can discuss these and other topics as well.

Generally speaking, Feb is not a bad time to host the tionol here in he Bay area. However, this is up for discussion. Do you want fog…then July or August. Sunny summerys skies…then September or October. Nice predictable not to cool or too warm weather…then Feb thru April. May can be nice, foggy, or too hot. Very unpredictable. Rain storms to put west of Ireland summers to shame…then December or January.

Participation is key. Come one come all.

I have no problem with going to Los Gatos to meet on occasion.

Hi Richard,

Maybe I should just keep my mouth shut since I am not really able to participate in the club much right now, but as far as I know, money is not the issue at all.

The main issue as I see it is that nobody is available to step up and help plan anything. Of the people that have helped plan in the past, seems like only Bob and Ted are able to volunteer their time right now. Which makes it pretty difficult to plan any sort of event when there are so few people to plan it! But I’m sure if you can help out that would move things along.

I know everyone would love to have a good event with lots of activities and a great venue, but that takes a lot of time and effort to put in place, and I’m not sure the club is going to be up for that this time…But even if we don’t end up having a full-fledged tionol this year we will still have a great time! Cause everyone knows we always have the best party tionol around.

AND the Best Pizza!!

Howayez? I’m getting to this a bit late… listen… the most important thing is to keep it fun. Isn’t that what it’s supposed to be about? (I know education too.. .that’ll happen naturally don’t be stressin!) It isn’t brain surgery. You can steal the timetable off the SCUPC site if you like, just swap out the names, it seems to be a decent standard format to run off - http://www.socalpipers.com/tionol_2008_autumn.html

For me Presidents Day weekend is perfect, rotating corporate vacation day and all that.

Richard… you have spoken… it is your time… shine little star… happy hands… and bow.

Pat.
