Please note Rory, Jimmy is talking about having to tape his old chanter, not mine…
This is part the quote from Jimmy
it appears that you have the bore, fingerholes, and reed all set-up correctly. I was able to tune the chanter perfectly to key D and all notes seem to play in correct pitch. This is a new experience for me because on my old chanter that I bought from someone else about 10 years ago, I have to use tape on the fingerholes and a rush to get that chanter to play in tune. Because your chanter is operating correctly ( in contrast to my old chanter, Im afraid ) I found that I could play my tunes quite quickly
I hope your not mis-quoting the quote, by cutting out parts of the post where Jimmy is talking about having to tape his old chanter to tune it, and trying to make it seem that he is talking about my chanter…
If that was not your intention accept my appologies…
I think your playing is quite nice… One should’nt expect to hear the quality and sound of your playing from a computer mic or a home recording and make a judgement…
We had a similar sort of discussion over on the whistleboard but I think if you want to claim greatness you should really work on getting soundclips up on your website that sound as a convincing representation of greatness, as it stands I don’t get the impression of a chanter I’d consider recommending to anyone.
It would be interesting also to hear the chanter played over drones.
I would like to put my 2 cents in while we are talking of my Chanter and My maker there of. Being a Low whistle player, buyer and trader I know one thing for certain you can’t satisfy everyones taste no matter how hard you try.
I went with Seth because of three important pieces of advice.
The price is very reasonable for a practice set after doing the research and receiving advice on an instrument I know very little about. But most importantly my financial advisor (WIFE) gave me a number that I could spend and Seth was there (No disrespect to any other maker). His price met my budget requirements.
I was advised by several folks in this forum to by American (Once again no disrespect to any other maker) because if I needed a repair or supplies from the maker, shipping would be cheaper and access to the maker would once again be favorable to my budget.
I found Seth to be very patient and kind when returning my emails which means a lot to me especialy the “newbe” questions that some makers get aggrevated with answering
So now you have my reasons for buying the Seth Hamond Practice Set and I can’t wait to hear the buzzing of the reed and driving my wife insane…
So once again slobber all over the screen and the keyboards, but just remember that Chanter is MINE all MINE…
Oh yea it reminds me of something my buddy always tells me," If you bought everyone you knew a brand new car, one or more would complain about the color". Now isn’t that the truth.
I only said the clip on Seth’s site didn’t convince me the chanter was worth recommending. An opinion, founded on what I hear on the makers website.
So I am not supposed to express an opinion? :
All I have to say is keep your negative comments to yourself
Seth thinks he can put me down by sending me PM quotes ‘from a regular poster’. Fine. I don’t know either if I have ever done anything substantial for piping so maybe ask someone else.
I emailed that guy (a day or two after he placed the ad) and offered to buy the chanter. No response at all. My guess is that the ad was bogus and in all likelihood the chanter was not one of Seth’s.
Making disparaging remarks about Seth’s work in a thread started by one of his most recent customers is, at best, utterly un-gallant.
Peace!
Reepicheep
Yea its a bogus ad , I emailed to the poster also, no response… I’ve only sold 5 of my chanters to people other than local friends and made quite a few for family and friends. I keep track of every person I sell a chanter to, and talk to each one personally or over the phone and , all still have their chanters, love them and I have never had a negative feedback and dont plan to…
Why not send a chanter out “on tour” to a few pipers clubs for them to try out and report back as to what their findings are? The people that review the chanter will be experienced players that can give an educated opinion on the work.
