Are there any good ongoing sessions in DC? I’m going to be working there for the rest of the summer so it would be nice to be able to blow off some steam by getting some tunes.
-Thanks

I’m not sure what’s in D.C. proper but Wheaton, MD isn’t far:

Or, J Patrick’s is the place in Baltimore, about 45 minutes to the north.
I’m headed to DC as well at the end of the month. Doesn’t anyone have any other sessions to recommend? I know there are many sessions and many fluters in that neck of the woods. Would appreciate a heads up as to which sessions might be the most tourist friendly. Thanks.
There used to be a Monday session at Nannie O’Brien’s. Dunno if that is current. Yelp tells me there are The Four Fields and Murphy’s in D.C proper, but no info about current sessions. You might drop an e-mail to the Bog Wanderers website to enquire. They are the house ceili band for the comhaltas branch in Fairfax, VA. You may be stuck with the greater metro area (Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware) since D.C and Georgetown are pretty heavily dedicated to straight ahead drinking on the weekends. ![]()

A fiddler in my session is from there and he told me that there’s a session somewhere around DC almost every night of the week. I know he mentioned one in Fairfax, Va but I can’t remember the day and venue. If he’s at session tonight I’ll try to remember to ask him some specifics.
On a side note, I grew up just outside of DC but I haven’t been back since '93. I try to avoid it at all cost but If I do ever go back there I plan on taking a pill so I don’t know where I am. ![]()

If you’re in DC for an extended period of time, definitely make the run to J. Patricks (about 2 blocks from Fort McHenry on Andre street). Monday night Donna Long (formerly of Cherish the Ladies) runs a friendly slow session, Tuesday night is a session run by Laura Byrne, and Thursday night Peter Fitzgerald (an excellent banjo and mandolin player) hosts a session. I think there may be more sessions, but those are the ones I attend when in Baltimore for work. Very fun place, and the less than $7 seafood mac and cheese simply rocks.

There are a few sessions around town. Feel free to send me a PM if you have questions. There has been some flux in the sessions here recently, with some closing down and others starting, but there are certainly tunes to be had if you are interested. There are tunes on Wednesdays and Sundays at the Limerick pub (which is on the metro), Tuesday’s at McGinty’s in Silver Spring (also on the Metro), Sundays at P Brennan’s in Arlington (reasonably close to the metro), Mondays at Nanny O’Brien’s (on the metro), plus assorted odds and ends here and there.
There is also J Pat’s in Baltimore as has been mentioned, which is a lovely chune.
