Sessions in Atlanta area?

I am probably going to be staying her in the Atlanta area for good. That said, I’d love to know where/when there are sessions around here. At the moment I’m in Alpharetta, will probably wind up in Duluth, with the new Serpent Music shop opening up there.

Please feel free to email me. bill at serpentmusic dot com

TIA

Thank the Lord!!! I have been looking for a shop in north GA forever. You could do some sessions at the new shop. You can check the city guide forum too.

Hey, Bill - good to see you back online.

I see from your website that you’ll be accepting orders again in November?

Hmmm.. Looking in Duluth for some commercial space now, pref with the ability to live there. Not easy to find. Guess Buford Highway is another possibility, but that area didn’t strike me as being particularly human friendly. Traffic around here seems to be a competitive sport, and for all I’d heard about “Southern Hospitality”, “Southern Politeness” doesn’t seem to apply to traffic. Ah, well, I’ve driven the I-35 sections of Dallas, so I’m used to it a bit, and at least here, nobody’s waved a gun at me yet.

Everyplace has its good and its bad points. I do need a supplier of the brass and chrome moly tubing here, so am scouring the phone book since shipping raises my (and your) costs.

The only whistles I brought with me are both soprano D, my Busman ebony, and my Stainless Serpent prototype, both of which get played daily. I still suck, but the whistles are fun, a happy sound to hear.

Bill,

Welcome to Atlanta. Unfortunately, you’ve got the traffic pegged - it’s just a pain, but you get used to knowing when and when not to drive

We have 2 regular sessions here in Atlanta and a teaching session run by Irish Music Traditions (IMT) (our local branch of CCE)

The weekly one is at at a pub in Buckhead called Fado . Fado is on Peachtree just across the street from ESPN Zone and the Cheesecake Factory. We meet every Monday at 8pm. This is an advanced session played at dance tempo by advanced players. Beginners and intermediate players are welcome and encouraged to come and listen, but this doesn’t serve as a teaching session.

Our second session is run by a friend of mine, Katherine Thomas. It’s a slow session, where Katherine provides music to people and they consistently play the same tunes, so its a great place for beginners and intermediates to get rolling on session playing. This one is at the Harp Pub is Roswell, GA (just north of Atlanta) and is from 5 -7 on the first and third Sunday of the month. This one has a website: http://www.roswellsession.com/

The IMT Session is once a month on a saturday and is more for teaching tunes. Info on the IMT session (including the tunes to be taught each time) can be found at http://www.irishmusictraditions.org

Welcome and I hope to see you out at Fado sometime. PM me if you have any questions about Irish music in Atlanta.

Cheers,

Pelham
