semi-scientific chanter comparison

Just an observation. Two chanters, three reeds.
Charles Roberts CP circa 2002
Froment circa 2001
By sight, both chanter bodies are identical length. Tone holes are quite similar in size of opening and placement. Froment tone holes are scalloped and body is a little thicker at the back D. Froment has wire rush that goes from end of chanter to point between B and C tone hole. CR has twist tie in U shape at bottom of chanter.
The reeds have to be inserted further into the CR chanter to be in tune. Pitch-wise, both chanters respond to the reeds (or reed to the chanter) pretty much the same other than the 1st 8ve C#.

Froment- All three reeds played with more low end base tone. There was not much what I would call upper end “reedy” sound. Very rich.

Charles Roberts- All three reeds played with more high end “reedy” tone. Brighter.

What I found really interesting is that while the two chanters emphasized their own timbres overall ,across all three reeds, each reed gave each chanter a different sound. If I heard a sound file of each reed in each chanter, I would think that they were 6 different chanters.

The “brightest” sounding reed in the Froment chanter was not as bright as the “richest” sounding reed in the CR. A little like the difference between a D whistle and a Low D (not that big of a spread, but hopefully you get the idea).

Overall, I can’t say that I like one chanters’ sound over the other. I like them both very much. They are just different.

I realize this is just two chanters and three reeds. I know that you can’t extrapolate 2 chanters into all chanters made by these two. I understand that the results might be completely different with three reeds made by someone experienced with the ART of reed making. I realize both chanters probably sound completely different somewhere with water in the air. Your mileage may vary.
