I have a similar trumpet case, and its quite sturdy and protective, but it also has a lot of formed padding inside which a) probably provides more rigidity to the shell, and b) keeps the instrument from sliding or rattling around at all.
I guess my acid test is, if you’re flying with your pipes, and run into a flight where the overhead’s all full and the flight crew’s unsympathetic and insist on checking it at the boarding gate (not running it through the full checked baggage procedure… that’s nuts regardless of the case), would you feel your pipes would be safe that in this case?
Looks like a GHB case to me. I have one for my Scottish Smallpipes. I dont think you would fit Uilleann pipes in that case. But it`s hard to tell from the photo.
Did you modify it or could you leave the compartment in? Could you give the inside measurements? It looks handy enough.
I am looking for a light case for a 3/4 set that is due to arrive, am also looking into bagpipe cases like the Bagpiper case, which is the same Brian Howard is selling, and Kilter cases but have a hard time deciding.
I have the large size semi-rigid case from Midwest that I use it for my 3/4 concert-pitch set. I do have remove both the bass and baritone drone slides, but the case quite deep and roomy, though not quite as long as I would like. It provides plenty of protection for general use, including flying in the overhead compartment, but I would definitely not trust it for checked baggage.
I have that exact same case for my highland pipes. I can bring to the next meeting if you want to see it. I think I might know someone selling it at a discount if you are sure you want that one.
