Seized up tuning slide

I recently acquired a nice high B flat flute which plays very well. However I can’t manage to budge the tuning slide. It is locked tight all the way in. Does anyone have any tips that might help free it?

Blackbeer had this trouble with an old flute and used gun lube to great effect. You might want to PM him for details.

The stuff is called “Break-free”. It`s a gun lube and you can get it at any gun store. A couple of drops on both ends of the slide let it set for a few minutes, maybe 15 or so and if your as lucky as I was it will break free.
Hope this helps

Tom

Also called CLP, I use the stuff on all my evil, black “assault” rifles

oddly enough that’s what the military uses on their evil black rifles too

Thanks for all the replies. I managed to shift it yesterday after playing it for a while.

That’s good. Not to nag, but it sounds as if the slide needs a good cleaning. Some flutes have lubed slides, others don’t. What make of flute are you playing?

Yes, if you can get the thing disassembled, give it a good cleaning with alcohol or some other kind of solvent, let it dry well.

Here’s a chronicle of an extreme case:

That page also mentions the usual fixes.
