Hi,
Im slowly going to the low whistle key by key and my target is F-F#.
I have been seeing old picture in Ebay and other resellers that M-Series has F-F#-G-Ab-A-Bb
keys available.
However, on Susato website, only L-series are the ones who are available.
If this is discontinued, does it mean that the F-F# in M Series is like that of the old A in S-series, where it shifts to high octave often when it is not intended?
Any reviews?
Regards,
Angel
It appears the “series” refers to whistles of the same bore diameter allowing for interchangeable bodies using a single head. An S-series A whistle would have been a low whistle in the S range, so it would likely have had a narrower bore than an A whistle in the M range. So if what you’re saying is true, that they used to make an S-series A, then at some point it appears they decided to widen the bore for that whistle.
In the case of the F whistle, you’re saying it used to be in the M-series. That would have made it a low whistle for the M-series. Moving it into the L-series appears to indicate the same as what I wrote in the previous paragraph.
And I could be completely wrong about this. I’m just trying to work it out logically, so don’t take my word as worth too much on this. Others likely have better information for you.

My recollection was that the low F Kildare was always an L-Series bore. I owned/played one ten years or more ago and it was the large bore AFAICR. It’s the third one from the bottom.

It was a good sounding and playable whistle, IMO. Of course it had the usual Susato Kildare low whistle characteristics - a big honking beak and a huge BH2 hole. I replaced it with a Burke which I prefer in comparison.
Then I found these…

I would think an M-Series low F would be playable. The S-Series A whistle was poor, IMO, but the M-Series bore should be able to support a low F design.

Thanks Feadoggie,
That is the image that I have found. I wonder who owns an M- Series of the F.
The S-Series A was a little poor on the octave shiftings after I tried on a second hand.
I tried making a new A-body on a half inch diameter CPVC pipe that fits the regular S-head.
It sounded good compare to the S-Series A and no octave shifts problem. It sounded quiet though.
I’ll try to post a pic and a music clip for that.
It’s funny about Susato: they’ve made so many variants of things over the years.
I have a Susato High D with a very large bore, which came in the pitch A=415, bought new from Susato around 1980.
I used to have a Susato A with a quite narrow bore, the same bore the often use on their High D and High Eb whistles, bought back in the 80s. Though rather quiet it played very nicely.
I have Susatos in Low Ab and Low F# and both have a bore of around 15mm. Both play nicely.
I much prefer Burkes for this pitch zone, for example my Burke Low F has a bore of around 20mm (as opposed to my Susato Low F with a 15mm bore).
