A bit of a mixed bag but has some good stuff on it including some nice old style trad and what I guess might be some earlier Sean Mc Guire fiddle.

The listing has track 10 Muma’s pet as by Sean Mc. Guire but it is him he is playing a flute. It is very nice playing. Can anyone confirm if it is Sean and if not who is it? I guess it might be a faulty listing. On track 53 there is a fiddle and flute duo but it is just credited to Sean Mc. Guire. Maybe the flute solo is from a Mc Guire album which had a flute player on some tracks but they are not credited on this listing.

McGuire played the flute, whistle and the pipes as well as the fiddle. There are a few recordings of his father playing the whistle as well, quite nice actually. I can’t immediately find a recording here (at home I mean) of him playing the flute, I have some piping and whistle playing from the late fifties though.
A flute/fiddle duet may be from one of his recordings with Roger Sherlock.
That “Youtube” clip is from one of many, many compilations of tracks from “Outlet” recordings, made in Belfast in the 70s /80s. I no longer have the LP record listed above, but am 99% certain that the “Mama’s Pet” track was a flute solo by Roger Sherlock, and not Sean Maguire. I have heard that Sean McGuire played flute, but am not aware of any commercial recordings having ever been made of him doing so. [ I wonder if he would have played everything in the 3rd octave ]
Nah… just listened to the track, that’s Roger, alright, unless in the unlikely event of Sean Maguire playing flute in exactly Roger’s Sligo style, and not taking any credit for it on the original LP.
Track #53 on “Youtube” is Track #7 from the LP posted above. 2nd reel is “The Rising Sun” [ it of course has other names ], but it’s not “The Holy Land”.
PS - on “the session.org” posting, see comment #1 from Aiden Crossey who originally posted the recording, and presumably had access to the sleeve notes when he did so. I think that should settle it, and that is certainly my recollection.
