Scottish tune set for beginner/advanced beginner

Hello out there,

I am quite new to this forum and I really enjoy spending my time here  A friend of me asked me to play scottish music on a wine and whiskey testing / party (oh nooo, first time playing in front of audience :astonished: ). I am not very familiar with scottish tunes like I am with irish ones. Thats why I would really appreciate to get some recommends for scottish tunes or tune sets that are suitable for an advanced beginner on low whistle like me (solo player).

Thank you in advance  Denise

Here’s a simple Scottish reel, The Sound Of Sleat, very nice too:

There’s a couple of Scottish jigs on the BBC virtual session:

To be honest though I think you’d get away with playing Irish tunes, sure who’s going to know over there if they are Irish or Scottish??? Even people over here sometimes argue over where certain tunes come from!

Niel Gow’s Farewell to Whiskey (slow air sometimes played as a reel)
Highland Whisky (strathspey)
Ferintosh (strathspey, named after the biggest whisky factory of the late 18th century)
New Claret (9/8 jig)

Mairie’s Wedding
Scotland the Brave
High Road to Gairloch
Barren Rocks of Aden

Most of those are pipe marches, but I’ve also heard fiddlers play them as dance tunes.

A Man’s a Man
Green Hills of Tyrol (composed by Rossini, of all people)
Rowan Tree
Bonnie Charlie
Skye Boat Song

All very easy tunes to play.

Campbells Farewell to Redcastle is a really cool tune, though a little harder. Probably not as difficult as many.

All of them you ought to be able to find recordings on youtube and sheet music.

Thank you so much  I will have to have a look for the sheet music now, my Kelpie is waiting. There are some really nice tunes and also some I allready know. I hope it works out fine.

A neglected tune for whistle (in my opinion) is ā€œBonnie Dundeeā€. It’s a pleasure to play.
One of my sets is called the Cavalry set: The Girl I left Behind me (Waxies Dargle), Garryowen, and Bonnie Dundee. The first two aren’t Scottish, I regret to say.
