While no one on chat the other night seemed to care about my new whistle, I thought that I’d share it with you. It’s a mystery whistle - not because I don’t know, but because the maker has not gone public yet. So to wet your appetites, let me share with you the best bamboo whistle that I’ve ever played (and s/he’s still working on them).
His name wouldn’t be Daniel, would it?
I had a visit from a man by that name a while back who was returning to his home country and was hoping to make bamboo whistles.
Man, that’s a sweet sound. I love bamboo. I have several Chinese style jobbies and a few Indian (asian) thingies. Good for being cheap and easily tweaked (at least you don’t want to jump off a bridge if you screw one up).
Any idea when these might be available and how much they will cost???
Lee, I’m not certain, but I wouldn’t be suprised if it were pretty quick (less than 6 months?).
Paul - I knew someone of your ilk would have an idea Now, no more hints! You’re going to get me in trouble with… um, Daniel or maybe not. It might not be Daniel. And there’s a lot of people in this world named Daniel and returning to their home countries. People do it every day.
Erik
p.s. Paul, you’ve really pulled away from me in the post race. We’ll be congratulating you on 2000 before long.
Ok, I just received the OK to talk in more detail about the whistle.
I’m sure that Dale will have a few things to say about it in the future, but for now I’ll tell you some history. The whistle is made by Daniel Chang, formerly of New Jersey. He decided to move back to China after many years in the States. On his way ‘home’ he made the point to stop through many of the whistle makers’ shops. He went to Glenn’s, Paul’s, Daniel B’s, Macks, Ralph’s, Michael C’s, mine, and maybe some that I’m forgetting. His stated intention was to get proficient at making whistles and to make them out of bamboo when he made it to China.
Since returning to China, he has begun sharing shop space with a highend Chinese flute maker. Between his instruction at his various ports of call in the States and with his new partner in China he has managed to make a very nice bamboo whistle. As I mentioned, he is still tweaking his design but it is essentially a Weasel/Burke/Bussman type mouth piece with a Chinese flute style slide. It has a nice amount of backpressure and a warm sound.
I’m not certain when Daniel will begin selling his whistles but I’m sure that he’ll let us know - he is a member of C&F. You might remember him talking about wanting to visit whistle makers a while back.
You know when you smile too much in real life, it starts looking like this to people who see you too often… Hey no chinese guys came to my basem…shop that I know of
