I purchased the scoiltrad flute beginner’s course. I’ve gone through lesson 1 and lesson 2 sending in my ‘recording’. Anyway I thought I’d move on to lesson 3 while waiting for feedback. So, I click on class 3 and it’s not there. I tried downloading the course again, and the same thing. Does anyone know if the download is messed up, or did I do something wrong? I emailed them Saturday, but have yet to hear anything. Anyone know what’s up?

Scoiltrad is often plagued by technical problems. Send them an email. They’re very ready to help.
Oh, i see you already sent an email. Well, it’s sunday, they’re probably in church. I’m sure you’ll hear from them soon.
I believe they enforce a slow pace in the class by having you download them two lessons at a time. So, after you get the evaluation for #2 you should get the url to download the lessons for 3&4.
I have the day off tomorrow, I really need to work on the one I have sitting in my queue.

Hello Lads,
Tony, I have already sent you an e-mail with the next two classes. Eddie is correct in saying that the classes are delivered in batches of two with each set being sent upon receipt of the assessment mp3 for the previous two. We feel that this discipline allows students to focus on current learning and to ulitmately get maximum benefit from the course.

I really like it! I think it’s definetly worth the money. At least so far. The only thing that I don’t like is that after I get the parts down I’d like to be able to play through the whole thing at the slower speeds. I was sort of able to do that by combining the mp3s and playing it outside the lesson. That’s an okay work around, but a little bit of a pain in the butt.
I also wish there was a full speed audio (without or without the video) that I could play along with after I get past the 50% and 80% streams. I was sort of able to do this though. I hit play on the video and when Conal starts to play the part the second time I jump in. But all in all I’ve enjoyed the lessons and feel like I’m making progress.
I have to say that I think the video really makes the difference. I can’t quite put my finger on why, but watching Conal’s fingers and breathing really helps!
I’ll try to write more later. I’m having a crisis. My flute cracked last night and I don’t know what to do. I took it apart for the night and there was this loud pop. I knew right away and I looked at the thin tenon of the body and nothing, then I looked at the head joint and where it connects to the tenon there is a thin crack about 5/8" long and goes all the way through. I don’t have any experience with this so I’m at a loss as to what to do…

Besides the cloud that’s haning over my head, I received my assessment today for class 2 of the beginner’s course. Conal was very kind, but very instructive too. So to add to my feelings that the video is very good in the class the assessments are priceless. Absolutely full of instruction AND very encouraging!
Even though I feel heartsick that my flute cracked, I feel good that I was ‘spot on’ with my cuts. Now if I could only play in celebration. But I do have a Seery coming, hopefully by Wednesday, so I guess it isn’t a complete loss. And I do have an oak D whistle so I suppose I can still play a few tunes.
Course I’ve been trying to find the silver lining in my flute cracking, so maybe if I can convince the Wife that I NEED a Hammy keyless and show her how well I did in my assessment she’ll go for it. But I think to get it to work I’m going to need to load her up with a few margaritas first so off to the liquer store!

Nice to see you have your priorities straight Tony 
I have seen more than a couple of posts concerning cracked flutes. Very scarry. I look at my two old 8 keys and thank my lucky stars that they have already been cracked and fixed and maybe will never crack again. And the fact that they sound so good is iceing on the cake. I have only heard that sound once and it was on an old bamboo flute I have had for 25 years or so. I was just playing away and bam. Nasty sound. I am hoping that rosewood is less ready to crack. The Dixon just feels less, I don`t know, stressed or something. Almost like it likes to be a flute. It sure as hell sounds like it likes to be a flute 
What flute was it that cracked Tony. Not the CB I hope.

It was the CB. But I have contacted Casey and he has offered to replace the head for just the cost of shipping. Just another reason why I really like Mr. Burns. I have also inquired as to the cost of an additional head, just in case. I will let everyone know, if they are interested, in the cost.
I think this was just a fluke, because I think Mr. Burns makes an incredible beginner’s flute. The craftsmanship is almost beyond description. And I still feel that I don’t really deserve such a fine instrument. It will be a long time until I do it justice.
I’d really like to try his other flutes, but right now I have my heart set on a Hammy so that will have to wait. The biggest bummer is that I learned the two tunes the local slow session is going to work on tonight and I’m without. Well, the Seery is on it’s way and I’ll get my beloved CB fixed in a jiffy so I suppose there is always next time.
I did learn something from all this. I KNOW I love playing flute. I have been so heartsick/heart broken since last night and I feel better now after talking with Mr. Burns but I still look at my flute as if one of the dogs had passed or someone stole my golf clubs (my other two loves… ).

Isn`t it so cool to get to meet these guys who make such incredable instruments. They are not only craftsmen but artests I think.
