Much to my wife’s amusement, this is one of the best Christmas’ ever! Santa brought me a shiny new Clarke Original whistle in D! I’d forgotten just how lovely they sound. This one is a gem - not too chiffy, easy to reach up into the third octave D, and exceptionally flute like which is what I hoped for.
I haven’t gotten any whistles specifically for Christmas, but have gotten/am getting a few not Christmas related.
We DID get some fantastic music, though. The Wooden Flute Obsession 2-disc set, a couple of Deanta (Gawd, I wish they’d get back together, they’re simply wonderful), a Lunasa, Altan, Boccherini cello concertos, and a few others.
Wow! I got a Susato low D and TWO Cherish the Ladies CDs! And, um, boy is that Susato hard to reach on the E; the hole is so wide, and my fingers are so skinny! Hmmmmm, guess I’m just going to have to start practising more…
No whistles (which is okay, because my trusy Improved Feadog is still my all-time favorite), but something to help me play all my music better instead of just hoping a new whistle will do the trick: a lesson from Scoiltrad from my daughter! YAY!
Susan
not exactly for christmas, but for chanukah which this year was in late november)…
a dixon tunable in high D. may i say that it is amazing, at least for me. i don’t hate any of my whistles ( the clarke original was the wrong choice as my first ax, but i sort of like it now). but the dixon is something special
i am a relative newbie (been playing for 8 months). although this is probably diseased, i already have a generation D, an original D, a feadog D, a sweetone D, and an original c. (it makes sense, it really does- one in each car, one at home, and one at each job)
what i did get for christmas ( wrong forum) is a pennychanter to take my first UP babysteps. i am trying, and i would like to eventual play pipes. but judging my my current sound on the pennychanter, my whistles should not feel threatened in any way.
Hi Folks,
I did’nt get any whistles but I got 2 cd’s, “Callan Bridge” by Niall & Cillian Vallely and “The Wind’s begin to Sing” by Karan Casey. Have’nt had a chance to listen to them properly yet.
This day keeps getting better! At my parents house I received an envelope with one of those Whistle Shop “we’re currently out of stock” messages because my parents bought me a Ralph Sweet Folk Fife!
OK, the message says they’ll get more stock in about 1-2 weeks — anyone know if it’s usually longer than that or are they usually right about the length of time?
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!!! My darling of a hubby bought me THREE Elfsong whistles for Christmas! An F/G Combo and a C. Alas…the mail is slow and even tho Sandy sent them special delivery they haven’t arrived yet, but I expect them any day. Plus..this same hubby gave me $100 in nice cold hard cash! Guess what I’m gonna buy with that??? MORE WHISTLES!! I am in WHoa heaven!!!
my wife gave me a colin goldie overton soprano “d”. i got a mack hoover pvc “a” from my parents, a matt molloy cd, joanie madden’s songs of the tin whistle & several native american flute cds.
the biggest surprise is that my niece from boston has taken up the whistle and learned quite a bit in the last few months. she brought many duets transcribed by her whistle/flute teacher (andrea mori) which we could play together. it’s great fun as we’re both at the same level. we’re also having fun trying to figure out ornamentation together & being in awe of brian finnegan’s playing on the flook cd’s as well as trying to imitate him on his cd tutorial.
this afternoon we hope to go out to the boulder early music store (colorado) & pick out a few whistles for the other nieces and nephews who want to join in all the fun.
happy holidays to all!
tom
