Rusty Tube

I’ve had a shaw A for a couple of weeks now. It’s a great whistle, but it came with all these little rust spots on the tube. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I’d try CLR to clean it up first. Brasso would work, but needs thorough clearning though after polishing.

Problem with Brasso is that it smells bad. There are some silver and brass cleaners that are water based and will rinse right off leaving no odor at all. Check your supermarket. The water-soluble ones seem to have a bit of an ammonia odor to them, and there is no hard rubbing necessary. Wipe on, let dry, wipe off, rinse, and you’re done. Try to keep it out of the windway, though.

After rinsing the whistle, dry it thoroughly, and you should have no problems. If it continues to spot, you could try a wipe with a very small amount of almond oil or woodwind bore oil. You shouldn’t even be able to feel it on there.

Good luck,
