My Rogge C Reg brass keys have become tarnished dirty.
Has this happen to any other Rogge sets or other Pipe makers sets.
Can you use Vinegar or recommend something different to use .
The the rest of the brass on the full set is fine but not shining clean and not new looking.

That’s what brass does…whether it’s a window sash fitting, fireside ornament, professional nameplate or set of pipes. If you want shine, Fergus, you either get the Brasso out, or order silver plating!!
I have to say that I actively cultivate the tarnished look on my set…it’s a lot less work, and folks will admire the really old instrument I play [2years]

yeah…over the holidays I was playing christmas carols and was asked whether my set was made in the early or late 1800s. I had to tell them most of it was only 6mos old and the rest only 2 years. hehe…not what they expected to hear…
Fergus,the reason the keys are more tarnished than the rest is because of the sweat etc from your skin on the brass.But as Boyd says its not a problem and not unique to Andreas.
I have heard that if ye want to keep them shining clean them with T-Cut.I can’t be bothered with all the fuss and prefer the patina.

If the tarnish bothers you, or reacts leaving a wierd smell on your skin, you can use a dab of white toothpaste on a paper towel. Just put a tiny bit on the towel and rub the stain out. You’ll be amazed at how black the towel turns. It works as well as most tarnish removers and leaves your pipes minty fresh. Another non-chemical fix would be a jewelers rouge cloth. You can get them easily for about $4.00 and they leave no residue. Carry it right in your pipe case and start polishing when you have the nervous urge to over-tune, or monkey about with your chanter reed. A layer of clear nail polish will keep the keys bright for a little longer, but it has to be re-applied frequently and tends to feel tacky even when dry.

Hello Fergus,
I would avoid using Brasso or any polish with ammonia in it. The is a great product called Cape Cod polishing cloths that do a great job without being too hard on the brass. If you Google “Cape Cod polishing cloths” you’ll get links to distributors in the U.K.

There’s a particularly nice metal polish called ‘peek’ you could try or if you’re really bothered by tarnishing you could lacquer them. Clear car lacquer works well on brass instruments and lasts for a long time (comes in spray form).
