Robert Moog RIP

The inventor of the synthesiser died yesterday afternoon.

I’d heard that…
I actually have an old Moog; it’s one of my mainstays…solid as a rock.
(it better be for what I paid for it! :stuck_out_tongue: )
Thank you, Mr Moog for my instrument!

I always wanted one. Ended up building my own at school (it was crap but functional). Carlos’ “Switched on Bach” was the first cassette tape I ever owned.

Met him, in Nashville, at a roll-out of a new Kurtzweil keyboard about 16-17 years ago (I believe he was chief engineer there at the time). In a room packed full of jaded session musicians he evoked a five minute standing ovation upon introduction. Good, down-to-earth engineer, who hadn’t (at that point) lost any of the youthful energy that drives new invention.
Try to find any electronic keyboard that has appreciated like the Mini Moog. The Hammond B3 is the only one (I know of), that even comes close.
RIP

Very sad. I saw the documentary movie about his life just a couple of weeks ago. Bob Moog was a class act.

I remember reading the album cover of Jesus Christ Superstar when it was first released and thinking “What the heck’s a ‘moog synthesizer?’ Sounds cool though.”

At least there will be some really cool music at the funeral.

I think that’s everyone’s impression of the Moog synth at first! I first started playing the piano af four years old, and at ten, saved up lawn mowing jobs for my first synth (an old analog Roland with a key missing that I later replaced with a popcicle stick :stuck_out_tongue: ). While shopping for my truly “first class” instrument, the used instrument store had a Moog that was well out of my price range…I remember thinking, “WTF is Moog supposed to mean?” I thought it was some sort of joke, like it was a cow or another animal of some sort…
I later bought an old Moog Rebel that I added to the ranks of my Ensoniq T-71, Yamaha “Electric Grand” and old Roland…sure wouldn’t mind a (new version) Mini Moog though.

I’ve always loved the Mini Moog and wish I could afford one. The real musical possibilities of that instrument as an instrument as opposed to a novelty can be best appreciated by listening to Jan Hammer play it on his solo CD “The First Seven Days.”

I think inaddition to finding a signature voicing for it, Jan Hammer absolutely mastered the expressive use of the pitch wheel.

Isn’t it beautiful?

Dale

other than having a keyboard - it looks like something my dad would have had in the basement with his amateur radio equipment!!!

(except it’s not green, like Heath Kit stuff was!)

Yeah. Except it’s beautiful.

Last year, I met the guy who wrote the history of the Moog Synthesizer. He gave an interesting talk and we had a good chat afterwards.

I’ve never played a Moog and, aesthetically, I always preferred the idea of the Melotron. I’ve heard from those who did play early models that they were very unpredictable on stage—you’d be playing along and suddenly go out of tune. Apparently a lot of Keith Emerson Moog freakouts were attempts to cover for a temperamental instrument.

Robert Moog seems to have been a great guy. He’ll be missed.

Quite right. ‘The First Seven Days’ is one of great underappreciated records.

Dale… get a ‘virtural’ moog. It’s done by software.

It is phenominal. I think.

When I saw Tony’s pictures I had a flashback to this thread:

http://chiffboard.mati.ca/viewtopic.php?t=24110&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=computer+submarine&start=0

Great. I post the link and the picture isn’t there anymore. It Figures
But I think one of the links on the thread might take you to the picture I’m
speaking of if you’re curious. It’s just that the “computer” in that picture
had a steering wheel instead of a piano keyboard. Of course if someone
actually goes to the trouble of finding what I’m talking about it probably
won’t look anything like Tony’s pictures. Such is my memory
these days.

I’m not trying to change this thread. Really. It’s just that Tony’s picture
and Missy’s comments brought back thoughts of this other thread, and I
wanted to share it, and then. . .never mind. I will keep quiet
now.

Rest in peace, Mister Moog. And thank you for sharing your talent with
the world. :frowning:
