Rivits for pipe bag making.

Hello, can anyone tell me what type of rivits are used on the seam in pipe bag making? Looking for the brass two sided type rivit used with leather bags ect. Thanks

Hi ChanterDan,

Since you’re in central New York, contact Mark Cushing:

http://cushingbagpipe.com/

He makes uilleann pipe bags and can probably help you out.

Best,
Dan

Why dont you go down to your local hardware shop and buy some gutter bolts like the one in the photo and use them. The aesthetic effect will be the same, UGLY.

RORY

Rory, what is wrong with you?

Nothing’s wrong with me,but thanks for your concern.
My concern is that someone can take something as visually beautiful as a set of pipes and completely ruin the aesthetics by banging a load of rivets around the bag which turns a piece of art into an industrial looking abomination, and if you dont see that, then I would have too fire your own question back at you.

RORY

ChanterDan, what you are looking for are called double cap rivets and you will likely want the medium size. You can find them through lots of leather craft supply places online, such as Tandy / Leather Factory. Be sure to get the tools to whack them with. Trying to close them with just a hammer on a hard surface does not work very well and ends up ugly.

Thanks John, just finish tying in new bag i made this weekend..Rory may be right, brass rivits may not be needed.Thinking for strength in the seam, but may be ok without.Cheers

Harley Davidson Bags :astonished:

Rory,
Yeah…so you think it will look really ugly when he puts that bag cover back on? I like the look of rivets anyway. To answer your question, there is plenty wrong with me, but I’m not the one who stated my opinion as if it was fact, was I?
Cheers,
Jeff

No, that would not make a Harley Davidson bag - but this would. (Sorry, they are Northumbrian smallpipes.) In blackwood, chrome, and black leather, with riveted and fringed bag, fringed bellows arm strap and spalted sycamore bellows for additional attitude. Now THIS is a Harley bag:

I think you need to add the ‘IMG’ tags - when I click on the file I just get text

Rory, Jeff, have few pints and a few tunes… maybe something to eat…

My opinion is fact, and so is yours.
When it comes to points of personal choice an opinion is fact. I dont like rivets in pipe bags and thats a fact.

RORY

I’m sorry, I should’ve said: Rory, chill the fcuk out.
