Rince Na h'Eireann Feis

Last weekend I attended my first competiion at a “feis” sponsored by Rince Na h’Eireann in Charlotte, NC. I had never been to one of these things and had no idea what to expect. There must have been at least 400 people there. The feis featured lots of dance competitions and several musical ones.

There were about 4-5 competitors in the “over 14” (way over)instrumental category. There weren’t any other whistle players in this group. Where were you guys?

I had been working on a piece for about 2 months and knew it fairly well. Even so, I got lost about a third of the way through it and had to stop and back up about 5 or 6 measures. Fortunately, I was able to play the rest of it without making any more major mistakes. I even managed to place 2nd in the competition.

It was great fun! I’m looking forward to the next one. I hope to see some of you there.

Congrats! Feisanna (pural of Feis) are so much fun! I compete in the dance part of the comps. but have yet to go to one with music comps.

Just a heads up for people, the Oireachtas (world-qualifiers) compition are coming up Nov. 16, 17 & 18. So if anyone wants to go see some great dancing and hear A LOT of accorden(sp? Can’t spell today), you should check it out.
Also if anyone is in the Bay Area, the Northwestern Oireachtas are in San Mateo this year. I will be there dancing and so yeah. I am very excited!

PS FEISANNA KICK PO!

We have 3 Irish dance schools here whose students travel to feisanna and festivals all the time. They will be putting on a feis here in May and would like to include music competitions. They have approached me (as I am a music teacher) to help organise the music competitions, unfortunately they don’t know anything about this (only about the dance competitions) Anyone out there know where I can find information about setting up local Irish music competitions? I need to know criteria, rules/regulations, repertoire, adjudicators etc. etc. Thanks.

You might try contacting this person for info. She was the contact person for the Charlotte feis.
