Rince Garbhchriche Ri Seoirse IV

Has anyone worked out a vaguely whistleable version of this intriguing tune from Danu’s All Things Considered?

It’s blocking my brain today which is a pain as I’m trying to get a set right for next week’s session.

Trisha

There was a George the IV? Was he the guy who abdicated? Man, I am so five minutes ago with the royalty thing. I do remember Napoleon the XIVth, though, with basket weaving and pretty flowers etc etc…

Hmm thanks for the George steer…my Gaelic is non-existent. However, a quick search of session music sites gives me, well, nothing even similar… :frowning:

Trisha

Also called the King George Highland, George IV’s Highland (Reel), and likely others. I was working on the very tune today, but my abc notation is crappy. Wish I could help better. It’s in A minorish until the B section, and then the first note is c#, the mode changing to A majorish (but no G#s, thank heaven). Hope these finer technical points can help get you started.

Where can one obtain the ABC for this intriguing tune?

Thx Nano  .

Managed to order a cheap secondhand Ashley MacIsaac recording off Amazon here in UK. He does the set King George IV/King George V/The Old King’s Reel/The King’s Reel.

Understandably, there is a loada confusion over nomenclature, clouded by there being a strathspey called King George IV as well.

Trisha

I don’t know Danu’s version, but a tune of the same name from Francie and Mickey Byrne appears in ‘The Northern Fiddler’. You may need to adapt to suit the whistle (raising most of the first part an octave will get you something playable).

I scanned it:

Thanks Peter…as I said the naming was going to get me in a pickle.

It is the King George IV as played on Wooden Flute Obsession which is a great tune in itself, so thanks again

The group Cran also do the tune you’re after, Trisha, on their CD Lover’s Ghost. That’s where I got the name in English, and they play it very much as a strathspey. I searched all over for notation, midi files, and ABCs, and I couldn’t find the tune in question. This is where I have to rely on my ears, especially for that last bit in the B section. At least I have CDs to refer to!
