Revisitng "Local Hero" Soundtrack Music

Hello To All,
New to Chiff & Fipple and Forum. I know I must be revisiting this topic, but is there a legit site (or even non-internet method) where
a person could purchase sheet music for a select tune (in this case, Whistle Theme from Local Hero)? Any info is greatly
appreciated and I hope this is not the ‘daft query of the week’ ! Brad

Searching Google images for - “local hero” knopfler sheet - seems to turn up quite a few pages for sale, one of which may be the one you want.

If I remember correctly (been a long while since I listened to it) the “whistle theme” is the same melody played on synth as the primary theme called “Going Home” which Knopfler plays on guitar. The guitar theme is available all over the web as tabs, abc and also as video lessons on YouTube. I’d say take your clues from there. Notes is notes, as they say.

It is actually a very simple melody and you should be able to pick it out by ear. Lovely little melody. It may be based on a traditional melody. Maybe someone here knows if that is the case.

I understand some football fans (New Castle?) hold the tune near and dear to their club(s). Local Heros that they are.

Welcome to the neighborhood.

Thank you both for the info. I’ll take your tips.
And thank you for the welcome, also!
Good to be here!

It doesn’t seem to have much of a melody to me.

Tell that to your geordie boys!

Maybe this version would be more to your liking. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wocSYBSnoFY

I like the melody. It is a good lil’ earworm. This has been a staple of Knopfler concerts for many years, either as an encore or the final piece. He occasionally does have a whistle player in the band that starts out the piece. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWbKxmqHryw

It is definitely a favorite in New Castle as you can see. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rfieu3Apotg

Happens that my great, great gran and the family sailed from New Castle to come to Philadelphia - just like the lyrics in another Knopfler song. Maybe it’s just the Tyneside connection that has the appeal for me and my ears.

Local Hero is a good little movie too.

Feadoggie…I agree, but then admittedly, I’m also a big M.K. fan.
Over the years, Knopfler has (many times), collaborated with some of the best musicians.
Liam O’Flynns’ gorgeous pipes on Golden Heart’s “A Night In Summer Long Ago” also comes to mind.
And I too, love Bill Forsyth’s little gem of a film, Local Hero.

The sheet music for “Going Home” is in the Dire Straits Live - Alchemy Songbook, if you can find it. Some overpriced copies are available through Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Dire-Straits-Live-Alchemy-Songbook/dp/0898982758

Matt,
Thanks for the info, also. Going to check it out. Slainte, Brad

No, actually, not my cup of tea at all. Strange, isn’t it, when you get Highland pipes right in tune and mixed in with pop music they just sound like a synth.

It’s interesting to see how so many people love that composition and feel emotional about it. It does nothing for me at all, and strikes me as typical pop stuff, which doesn’t interest me in the least.

Ah now that’s much better! Bumped up in tempo, I can hear a melody there, for the first time. Perhaps I’ll learn it on the pipes, and play it at the pub, for the Magpie supporters.

(Great video by the way… the immortal Number 9!)
