Last week I got four of the #1s for individual flute cases plus one of the #3s and the little mini hygrometer for the inside of the Flute Vault (aka the Rubbermaid tote). Humidity in box now remains at a steady 70% (in a house with a woodburning stove); nothing’s leaking; flutes are happy; the whole mess cost under $30.
HUMISTATS ROCK.
Further updates if necessary but for now? I give them a 10, Dick.
I used to use them in my fiddle case before using the “Stretto” system. The only gripe I had with the humidistats, is that the plastic bottle can become cracked after a while of taking the cap off. If it’s enough of a crack, the bottle leaks all over the place. I don’t know why they don’t offer them in glass or a more durable synthetic. Seems like everything’s made out of cheapo plastic these days…
Oooh, good to know, Corin. Thanks! I actually ordered extras thinking “hmmmm … plastic … I don’t know …”
But hey. If our instruments weren’t made of that cheapo wood that cracks all the time …
Yeah, go figure, the best wood for flutes is about the most brittle stuff out there. Nature’s practical joke…
As far as the humidistats go, I think the cracking problem would be solved if the little cap were threaded. They crack because the caps ae held by quite a bit of friction.
This one here http://www.thesherman.com/accessories.html
is similar but the caps are soft plastic which pull off and there’s a sponge
inside. I bought it in a cigar shop which used to be nearby - they sold a
chemical solution to put in it, but said you can use water instead, so I
just use water (and only in the winter). I’ve had it about 4 yrs and it has
never cracked. (it stays in the winter plastic box) Mine is the 2" one. It
seems to be a similar cheepie price.
