Woud anyone be willing to record and post the folowing tunes on Clips and Snips, Magpies Nest/Chattering Magpie and Kerry (The Green Fields of Rossbeigh)? I’ve been trying to learn the Chattering Magpie of the Cheiftains DVD “An Irish Evening” and came across two problems:
a) They play it way to fast for me to keep up
b) The version is different to the Paddy O’brian’s set that I got of a tune book from Patrick D’Arcy’s site (p15).
Those listed are some of my all time vafourite tunes and it would be a deffinate shame if I couldn’t play them on the pipes. If you have the equipment please make a record and post it on Clips and Snips.
If you’re having problems pulling tunes off recordings you might want to check out some of the slow-down software available. If you do a search on this you will get several threads where this has come up before. Everyone has their favourites, and some of them are even free. Some software will not only slow down the tune you’re after, but allow you to change the key a bit if required.
What a great tune! Starts off a tad like Colonel Frazier, uh? I learned it from Eoin O’Riabhaigh’s playing and the Planxty album “After the Break.” I was the guy playing the Sean Reid’s set. I would be more than happy to post the Magpie for ya. Might be a week or so.

I have a private recording of her playing it in a set with Miss Thornton’s (accompanied by a spoons player), so she definitely played it but dunno if she recorded it with the Ballinakill band.

this is just what happens when you learn all your music from one person.
I’m happy to sound like a shadow for now but I suppose even when I
eventually sound more like myself, that will always be there. (and sorry
for having spit out that very last note..)
These Aggie White tunes, yes I thought she recorded them both. I am still
somewhat confused about which is which, but I think Mary Bergin recorded
one of them also - I think the second one, though I might have mixed
them up again. And, I believe this second tune was composed by East
Co. Galway fiddler Paddy Kelly, who played with the Aughrim Slopes.
By the way the first one is also on the Mona cd (Patrick Orceau) with Brian Holleran playing on it.
Brad I could not believe that was you when I saw you claimed ownership
of that Halloween costume for the Tionol (sp?) at East Durham. We were
eye-ing the pics of that masked fluter with admiration!!
It’s too bad Bruce didn’t snap a photo of me doing my sword-swallowing routine with the flute afterward. I tell you, that’s a hard enough trick with a keyless flute, but when you’ve got 6 keys…
The first one is the correct one. Thanks for putting that up for me (and your time). It’ll be a great help with learning the tune, although not the pipes it gives me an idea on how its (Chattering Magpie is) suppose to be played. Its played at the right speed to.
