I’ve got a few regulator issues at the moment. First one is a broken key block on the baritone f#. It broke along the pin mount, fortunately only on one side so the key is still attached though I imagine the good block is under undue stress. I’ve tried regluing the broken bit back on but glue isn’t strong enough. I was considering cutting out a small piece of ebony and gluing it on the side of the mount to provide more reinforcement in addition to gluing the broken bit back on the mount…
Second problem is that my bass reg has never really worked properly. the G always double-tones. I’ve had a few pipers and makers attempt to re-reed, but to no avail. Is it worth getting the bore and tone holes reworked to ensure they are the correct sizes? I have noticed a rush glued up above the C note and it isnt moving anywhere… Can anything else be the cause, such as the reed seat, size of the reed cap, etc?
Thanks in advance.
For goodness sakes DON’T try to fix this yourself. WHo made your pipes?
Send the broken reg to the maker so that he can fix it properly.
I’ve got an Adrian Jeffries full set and its a nice one too. Unfortunately he’s moved back to Ireland, and I had difficulties with him fixing stuff when he was in Australia. Would even prefer another maker to fix the bass reg issue.
Are you sure about that?
According to his web site he seems to still be happily living down under ![]()

Adrian is indeed in Ireland at the moment. You could try Ian McKenzie. He’s in the Blue Mountains somewhere. Failing that, Malcolm McLaren in Brisbane is a worth a try. PM me and I’ll see if I can hook you up with him.

If you’re not going to go with a pipemaker, and I would strongly reccomend that you do so, you can go to an expert woodwind repair shop. They could likely glue and pin the key block for you. Though it will be made more difficult since you’ve tried your own repairs.
What do you mean by the G double toning?
