'Remembering Tommy McCarthy' concert

Last Friday night the second annual concert to remember the late concertinaplayer, piper and whistler Tommy McCarthy, was held in the Armada Hotel in Spanish Point Co. Clare.
Despite the return of winter to the West and the storm and rain pounding the coast all day, there was a good turn out. The concert is held to coincide with the Fleadh Nua in Ennis and attracts a fair number of overseas visitors that are allready in the area for the Fleadh.
Despite my posting earlier on no C&F-ers seemed to have turned up. A few people I had e-mail contacts with through concertina, net made it though, fair play to them.

The line up for the concert was as follows:

The McCarthy Family; ( Jacqueline, Marion, Bernadette, Tommy), Tom’s grandchildren; (Annie-Ruth, Siobhan, Lucy, Maisie, Padrác), Henry Benagh,
Nollaig Casey & Arty McGlynn, Miriam Collins and the Clare concertina players, Eamon & Geraldine Cotter, Ita Crehan, Angela Crotty, P.J.Crotty, Jackie Daly, Tim Dennehy, Meave Donnelly, Mick & Jane Flynn, Kitty Hayes, Noel Hill & Brian McGrath, Michael Hynes, Máire & Conor Keane, Tommy Keane, John Kelly, Peter Laban, Tony Linnane, Patrick Lynch, John Lyons, Padraig MacMathuna, Sean MacNamara, Tom Munnelly, Meati Jo Sheamuis O Fatharta, Brid O Donoghue, Noel O Grady, Peadar O Loughlin, Sean Talty, Michael Tubridy, Young Mullagh Set Dancers

What can I say, it was brilliant even though I had to leave too soon after midnight when my eight year old son couldn’t keep himself awake anymore, I missed half of it so. A good sum of money was raised for the Clare Cancer Centre and as this is an annual event, be sure to make it next year if you are in the area.

All praise to Jim Carroll, PatMcKenzie, Nell Gleeson and Catherine Talty for organising this.

Well, I can’t believe that I’m the only person who couldnt make it cuz there’s no bus going at Spanish Point. It’s a concert who seems to be available only to people with cars…

Meatti Joe Sheamus of Radio na Gaeltachta recorded the concert for radio. Weekenders has re-posted a link originally sent to the IR TRAD list to another thread. You can hear the broadcast of the 28th made from part of the concert at

It’s the father of the man who ownes the Burren in Boston. Who else did you think it was.

I thought it might be Tommy McCarthy, whom I only know from an album cover, on which he looks different. And what do I know about the the family trees of Boston innkeepers?

And you played…?

If you’d look on the back of the CD cover you’d find a pic of Tommy and his grandson Padrac taken on the same occasion, 1995 if I remember correctly

I thought some of you guys played in the Burren in Boston so assumed you’d have come across Tommy jnr who is a lovely fiddle-player

And yes, I played.

Come on everybody!! Follow this link if you can. I had trouble with it right after posting last night but its playing here at “work.”

Don’t give up if you hear a guy talking Irish at first the music starts momentarily. Remember to follow link down to Lan a Mala and click, whatever that means…

Dazed, you’ll hear rolls in the first piece and also just the right tempo for a quick reel. Beautiful flute playin on second cut and well… I’m listening as I type. Third song is whistle with guitar just beautiful. Whole program is 47 minutes long, i think counting talking.

Although some of us may have gotten a little too peticular to hear piano, that is the accompaniment on some but it is played in a style that reminds me of the latest dadgad-y ways, with lots of unresolved and modal type chords. Piano always sounds a little too authoritative..
