What about “Morning Has Broken”? I undertand that’s from an Irish hymn. Or my all-time favourite, “Yodelling for Jesus”.

Is there any ABC notation for Ag Criost an tSiol? I am now obsessed with this tune! I love this forum!
I’m partial to “Dropkick me Jesus..” but haven’t done that on pipes yet. And this is my professional opinion…
Matthew
In the Sweet Bye and Bye
Sweet Hour of Prayer
Shall We Gather by the River
Jim,
Yes! “Sweet Hour of Prayer” is a good one. Just this past Sunday we heard this tune played on a hammer dulcimer, and I asked my wife what that tune was, as I thought it to be an excellent choice for the next hymn to learn on the pipes. ![]()

I’ve always liked “Jesus has my Barcode”
Its an old church with a BIG church organ which might be used to accompany the pipes (I’m not even going to worry about the question of volume for the moment). I understand the acoustics are excellent for the organ and for choirs who have sung there. The pipes? We’ll soon find out.
So far, we’re gathering ideas. We’re hoping to keep an Irish or Scottish base to the music, but we’re not ruling anything out. It’s not determined whether there will be singing or not, or what other instruments will be there, but it’s possible we’ll have at least a harp.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I’d no idea you were all so spiritual!!
Keep the faith,
I always thought Amhrán na Páise (“based on the passion and resurrection of Christ”) as sung by Joe Heaney was a wonderful and powerful melody. It sounds suitable for pipes.
“Seacht nDólás na Maighdine” is on Sorcha Ní Ghuairim’s CD. Another lovely melody.
If you’re really ambitious, I suppose you could try out Caoineadh na dTrí Muire…
Nóirín Ní Riain put out a disk of traditional religious song in Irish, so all in all, there’s a good handful of traditional Irish religious music available.

oh yes! how could I forget. not only is it “morning has broken” but also “Luireach Pádraig” or “St. Patrick’s Breastplate” based on the prayer of the same name

Thanks, Cynth for the link to the write up about doxology. Very interesting.
Also, that’s Martin Nolan playing pipes on the “Revival in Befast” CD by Robin Mark. I like it.

Ag Críost an tSíol sounds a lot like Patrick D on the pipes…maybe he’ll share the ABC!
When I was young there was a choice of two churches in which the goodly type o folk in Moate Westmeath went to hear mass. The Convent or St Pats church. Most of the men opted for the convent for 2 good reasons.
a) The service was shorter
b)The nuns used to play good thumping marches on the organ. The Boys O Wexford et al..That sounds good enough for me. ![]()
The following list o tunes ,selected frae O’Neills are chosen for their religous titles and would be most suitable for the sort o ceremonies I would like to go to but which may not be suitable for the members of the Godsquad who have contributed thus far… ![]()

Ag Críost an tSíol is a track I play on Fields of Freedom by Ric Blair, available through his site at www.ricblair.com I play a smattering of tunes and as well as various other bits and pieces throughout the CD. Most of the piping I do is on my Wooff B set as a lot of the songs just happened to be in E… very handy for the B’s ![]()

I think Amhrán na Páise and Caoineadh na dtrí Mhuire are the same song?!
I think Amhrán na Páise and Caoineadh na dtrí Mhuire are the same song?!
Partial clips of each:
Where did you get the recording of the second one? It’s just that the first one goes under the two names, Caoineadh na dTrí Mhuire and Amhrán na Páise. Who is the latter singer. It’s the same words I think, different air. I could could only play it once.
Thanks for the clips.
Hmmm. I don’t think Caoineadh na dtrí Mhuire will be appropriate. It’s a Protestant church. ![]()

It’s a Sorcha Ni Ghuairim CD:

To the best of my ability, the words are entirely different. As a side note, the Joe Heaney clip isn’t long enough to give the full structure of the song and air.
