Relationship between folk flutes and spirtual traditions.

Hi All

There seems to be a very strong connection between folk flutes and spiritual/mystical traditions.

Ney - Sufism - Jalaluddin Rumi
Shakuhachi - Zen
Bansuri - Krishna

Does anybody have material on the subject ? it seems interesting

I found an article about a Sufi who plays and makes Nai flute

This another one on shakuhashi I found with google: breathing flute zen meditation:

Didgeridoo I am pretty sure is plenty to find about this as the low frequencies are very helpful to get the mind into a meditative mode.

In General I would think that any wind instrument (not bagpipes though ) from flute to didgeridoo has been part in all cultures spirituality simply because breathing deeply and in a certain regularity and sounds in certain frequencies can bring your brain into a meditative mode.

Thanks Brigitte for the articles

I don’t know Hussein Darwish (the ney player mentioned at the daily star), but I do know Ronnie Nyogetsu Seldin and took a lesson with him once here in the US.

Do you know where one could get a good didgeridoo?

Hello Hisham,

there are plenty of good didgeridoo makers, do you want a “traditionally” made one or man-made one. You could even make your own one to try it out easily, I am happy to give you tips and help you out on what material to use for a selfmade one. Colin and myself have lots of didgeridoos, from Australian ones to homemade. As I said, I will be happy to help you out with information, just let me know if and when you want to start on this.

I contacted today Mr. Antar, I hope I did not write too much too him

Best wishes
Brigitte
