regulator reeds

So what’s the difference between chanter reeds and regulator reeds? Can a chanter reed be used in the regulator?

My bass regulator uses the same size reed as my chanter, but you don’t want regulators to jump octaves so the scrape is different.

They’re spelled differently. I guess different sets are set up differently. Usually tenor and bari reg reeds are the same size as the chanter reed, with the bass being larger, as it goes down below the chanter. But what Tony says is correct - they are usually a bit heavier than the scrape on chanter reeds, as they want to jump octaves on you.

I would think it quite unusual to have a bass reg reed that was the same size as the chanter reed.

I’ve noticed that baritone reg reeds are often similar in size to the chanter reeds, except that the reed has a longer scrape since it doesn’t need to jump octaves, because the two bores would be similar in size.

With my Froment B set, the baritone, tenor, and chanter reeds are of the same dimensions as given by the maker (except probably slight scrape differences). But, the regulator bores on this set are made to accomodate a tuning rod (not a small wire!) that runs all the way from the tuning pin up past the highest tonehole. This is the only set like this that I have seen, or know of. I’ve heard that Coyne had a universal formula for the dimensions of the chanter, tenor reg, baritone reg reeds.

My Rogge regs take a much smaller staple than a chanter reed staple. All three regs take the same size staple too.
