reg key pad replacement

Hi all, I need some suggestions as to the type and source for regulator key pads. I’ve looked at musicmedic.com and they sell clarinet pads of the proper size but I’m not sure if the materials are correct for the reg holes. My regs were made by deKeyzer and are pin mounted. Also which is the best way to remove the old and install the new
thanks,Rick

What I use is “closed cell Foam” the really dense foam, the kind that is used for yoga or sleeping mats. Can be found at camping supply stores. Sells by the foot.

It cuts easily with a fine hacksaw blade or sharp knife.. Glue it to the key with super glue. I use a band saw and cut a thin strip then I cut a small piece and glue it to the key, removing the excess. This stuff creates a great air tight seal.

All the best,

It really depends on the maker. Saxophone or bass clarinet pads are the right thing for Crowley sets but few others. Also, the adhesive used to affix the pads depends on the maker.

Some use traditional shellac/wax-based cement (as used in other woodwind instruments), which is best removed (and re-seated) using a soldering iron to gently warm the key from the outside; other makers use contact cement (in which case it probably will peel off), etc. The meltable shellac/wax cement can be bought from woodwind suppliers.

The woodwind instrument pads are the right choice if the key seats are of the “volcano”-shaped type, i.e. with a sharp-ish raised inner rim. If the key seats (i.e. the surface the pad seals against) are flat, then Pat’s closed-cell-foam suggestion makes sense. (In a pinch closed cell foam will work for most styles, while it may not be optimal.)

Thanks Pat,I’ll give it a try.

Thanks Bill, 'the key seats are the “volcano” type. The clarinet pads come in woven, felt and cork.I’m guessing the felt would be the best choice. I may try the closed cell first and if it doesn’t work for my needs try the woodwind pads Thanks , Rick

I wouldn’t advise the cork or felt types - as far as I know, the best choice would be the “skin” pads, which have a super-thin layer of soft leather on the surface. Those are what I have used on Crowley repairs, and they seem to match the originals. Felt or cork may be more likely to leak, in the absence of moisture from breath.
