Hi Folks. I’m making a new reed for an Alfonsus Kennedy chanter. Does anyone have some comments on the Kennedy chanters and some special notes on reeding one. It’s a standard D pitch.
Dirk, try my post about old taylor reeds in this forum .I have a pic of an old kennedy reed in there.![]()

Thanks for the tip. Do you happen to know if there is a close relation between Morris Kennedy and Alfonsus? Also, the reed that came with the chanter is a good one - fairly large and wide with a strong presence. (I think the reed is a little bit louder than most that I have heard.)
By the way - nice job on the web site!

Thanks Dirk. I think they are father and son. I may do some brief measurements on the reed in my site if time allows. I might think about using a thin wire to rush the bore if the chanter wants to play loud and or sharp in the 2nd octave.
Thanks! This chanter is a pretty loud design, with a more conical bore than usual,
so any tips for making a quiter reed to suit would be helpful, too. Though rushing the bore would quiet it a little, I might need a bit more to give it a good balance. I’m thinking about trying softer cane, and thicker lips.
Try it, you might like it.
