Hey folks,
Im relatively new to the tinwhistle and was hoping to find some help here. I learned the basics going to school in ireland but quickly forgot most of it when i stopped playing. Ive been looking on the net and most of the stuff ive found is in sheetmusic and after a few days of trying to get my head around all that im ready to throw the whistle through the window. Dont think i can play by listening just yet either. Tablature is a bit better but the most of the tunes are too complex for my beginner fingers so basically im lookin for some easy tunes to get started so i can get the rythm down. (ive mastered twinkle twinkle already ha ha) Any ideas? 'cos my head is wrecked.
Cheers,
Gotta go, france just scored against italy and i dont wanna see them win another world cup.
Most any tune’ll do, as long as you own enough whistles. But seriously, do yourself a favor and tough it out learning standard musical notation. It’s really not as hard as you think, and it will open up whole worlds to you very soon. The general opinion of whistle tab, at least on this site, has been pretty negative. Learn to read just enough to get a basic melody, and then let your ear be your guide. It’ll happen! Good luck!
I have much the same problem, I cant read music notation and whistle tab makes no sense to me. But I’m moderately good at playing by ear, except for really complicated tunes. But it may help you if you can find a site with video’s of someone playing tunes, that way you can see aswell as year how its played. www.whistletutor.com is the only site I know of that has video’s on it.
Good luck ![]()
Hang in there with the standard notation reading. You can find many written out tunes on http://www.thesession.org/ and then use http://www.tinwhistletunes.com/clipssnip/ for recordings…or listen to a few tunes from the clips and snips to find something that you would like to learn before searching for the title on “the session” site.
Best of luck!!
If you can find a basic written whistle tutor, such as the one that comes with Feadóg brand whistles or the one Bill Ochs wrote for Clarke, it will teach you musical notation along with the instrument…and you’ll gradually build your skills by working first from simple music. Another good tutor (but I think it may be out of print) is Robin Williamson’s “The Penny Whistle Book.”

One website with easy songs, written in both whistle tabs and the musical score, plus midis is Whistle and Squeak. It’s worth a look, indicaman.

Interesting site! Looks great for beginners, and particularly those looking to make the jump from tablature to standard notation. I’d highly recommend spending time there!
