There are a number of places currently available on the FÁS project which has been running in Na Píobairí Uilleann’s archive for the past 4 years. The course involves trainees in various archiving duties including:-
Digitisation of various mediums including:-
• Audio – Vinyl, reel to reel, cassette tape – all captured and digitally remastered
• Video – Video cassettes digitised and transferred to DVD format
• Printed materials – Library scanned and edited for web publication
• Name/article indexing of major Irish music publications
• Tune indexing of Irish music collections
The above material is then catalogued in various spreadsheets according to type. After this it is transferred onto Na Píobairí Uilleann’s website where members worldwide can search through the material and download audio, video, scanned images, etc. directly from the archive.
The course also gives trainees experience in film making and editing, sound recording and editing, as well as social/historical research. There will also be a number of other activities such as tin whistle classes and Irish classes. Also from time to time guest speakers give a presentation on a related subject, guests of late have included Harry Bradshaw and Peter Browne.
This course is available to EU residents who are registered as unemployed in the
Republic of Ireland.
