I was planning on upgrading my computer anyway, and then my computer got zapped by lightning. I was wondering what is needed to record music. Do you just need a microphone and some editing software?
Also, is there a way to input your whistle playing into a program that will generate sheet music from it? I know you can do this with MIDI instruments, but I wondered if there were ways to do it without.
It depends on what kind of recording you want to do. I use an SM 58 microphone and a program by Cakewalk ( http://www.cakewalk.com ) called Sonar 2.0 It’s pretty cool stuff… if you have money (thank god for supportive parents). If you want to go the free way, Tech TV has a show called AudioFile, which is all about music technology. Their site has a page full of free recording software like free versions of ProTools and such. You can get that at http://www.techtv.com/audiofile I would browse there. As for microphones, don’t use those stupid little stick things that come with computers, buy a good one. It doesn’t have be a $300 one to get a descent sound either. You’d probably want a pretty good sound card. I use an SBLive! card that supports sound fonts (best invention ever) You can learn more about that at http://www.soundblaster.com As for the midi thing… I don’t think they make a midi tin whislte.. lol… but I do have some feature in my sonar program that can take audio and put it into notation, but it sucks really bad. If you use vibrato or your pitch wavers any it will look like madness. Don’t think they’ve perfected that technology much
I’ve been meaning to beef up the info in the Annex site about recoridng…there is some info there already that you can check out at the link below.
If I remember correctly, Michael Eskin has a lot of innfo about recording and recording programs on his site (there is a link to his site on the Annex site as well…check the Teachers page)
Someone recently posted about a new recording program that looks neat (was it Aodhan who posted it? dont remember)
