All,

I’ve learned my first song!!! :smiley: Oh Danny Boy. Anyway I want to record it so I can send it to my Dad and Brother, but the recorder with windows only records 60 seconds. So does anyone know of freeware/shareware software that I might use to record longer?

This exact question came up not very long ago.
For very little money you can get an E-jay system.
That way you can record as long as you want and also convert the masterpieces to mp3 format, which makes it possible to send in e-mails.
The windows system records wav files that are too big to send in e-mails with most systems. And they also has various other advantages.
I guess that didn’t help you much today, or I don’t know, mabey they can be downloaded. But you probably wount regret buying it later.

Audacity is free and quite powerful. Be prepared to spend some time experimenting…it’s got a bit of a learning curve.

About the Windows toy recorder thing: there’s an easy trick to go around the 60 second limit:

  1. record a file with 60 seconds of silence; save it somewhere (it doesn't have to be silence, but that's the easy thing to do -- just create a 60 second wave file).
  2. Use **E**dit, **I**nsert File, to insert that 60 second file as many times as you want. Each time, you get an extra 60 seconds. If you want to record 3 minutes, for example, insert it 4 times so you'll have a maximum of 5 minutes. When you're done, use the Edit menu again to delete the unused portions, save.
  3. Don't forget to set the file type (**F**ile, **P**roperties) before you record. If you're recording yourself alone, record in mono to save space.
  4. Use lame (google for "razorlame") to convert your WAV to MP3 before you send to Dad and Bro.
  5. Post a copy in Clips&Snips!
