I haven’t seen this topic (at least in a while), but what do you guys usually drink when playing, if not in general? It’s generally Beamish for me or a Bodingtons for something refreshing.
At the moment it has to be shimmering sands which is a real ale from the foxfield brewing co. one of last years real ale awards winners (also brewery/pub is 150 yards down the road) its great stuff a good crisp bitter and you get drunk from the feet up!! so you can still play but you can’t walk! ![]()
I try not to drink when I’m playing. …honest. No, I really mean it.
Afterwards though I’m rather partial to Ruddles County. I also like Kilkenny and Guinness.
At home, it’s generally wine rather than beer…I’m particularly partial to Santa Cruz Mountain Shiraz, but can rarely afford it, so more often it’s Australian Shiraz.
As far as beer goes, if I can possibly get it, it’s Anchor Steam all the way. Next choice: Santa Cruz Lighthouse Amber.
Redwolf
I don’t think I’ve seen Beamish around here (Peoples Republic of Montgomery County, Maryland, US; where the county, to protect the people, is the sole distributor of alcoholic beverages). I recently tried the porter and oatmeal stout of Wild Goose, a Maryland brewery, both of which are really fine. If you can ever find Dominion Stout, I think it’s one of the finest around.
I largely drink my own brews. Pilsner and oktoberfest lagers; lambic and weizen wheats; bitter, ESB, and mild and well-hopped red-brown ales.

Yes indeed. I’d also be up for a Youngs or a Fullers London Pride if only I could track them down around here. (It seems to be a curiously English day on board today doesn’t it?)
Lately, Wexford Ale. Mmm so creamy.
Kalamazoo’s a great beer town, by the way, if anyone’s passing through…Not for the faint of taste buds. You can end up with something horribly pungent and skunky or a one-of-a-kind brew you never forget. I was happy to meet some Chicago Irish players who spoke well of Bell’s beer http://www.bellsbeer.com/.
I’ll have to check out the Ruddles, etc. Anchor Steam hurrah!
Cara
I can’t really drink much because I have a very low tolerance and get drunk from three sips, so I don’t drink when I am playing, but when I am punting, I’ll sometimes have a Bass or a Harp.

Same here. I drink diet coke. I’f I’m not playing, though, I can manage to choke down a sip or two of Barrel Select or Three Grain whiskey from the Forty Creek Distillery.

Youngs has gone ![]()
Fullers bought waggledance of youngs receivers. - a sad day for the larger independent, most youngsters seem to only drink Bud (sad sad day).

JessieK,
By punting do you mean as on a river with a pole, or betting on the horses/dogs?
Drat this English slang, it’s so confusing. Maybe you bet on horses while punting up the river - that’d be double punting.
My own tipple is Strongbow Cider. I know it’s just a bunch of chemicals in a glass, but at least it doesn’t have bits floating in it like some Scrumpy Ciders.
Wombat - I cycle pass the Fullers Brewery by the Thames most days - you can smell the hops 100 yards away.
By punting, I meant watching a session.

And kicking a ball as well a the same time and that would be triple punting, and if you were watching a session that would be ****
Oh this is getting silly.

In winter, like now, I’ll usually have a hot whiskey or two, a favorite drink in Ireland. It’s 3 parts water, one part (Jameson, Paddy, Powers or whatever) whiskey, sugar, cloves and a slice of lemon. If it’s summer, then Guinness or Murphy’s Stout. I’m playing traditional music so I drink traditional drinks.
Beers? Locally, Sierra Nevada Celebration (winter) or Anchor Liberty Ale (in hot weather) are favorites. When I can find it on tap, Beamish.
An Islay malt like Laphroig or Bowmore is good for when I’m in a sippin’ mood.
I’ve been supporting the Guiness family for years. Love it, love it.
N, not so adventurous
blackhawk,
do you boil the water then add rest??? I have a bad sore throat and that sounds like just the ticket!!!
I usually drink home brewed dark Scottish ale. My family has been brewing for several generations. It is in the blood I guess you could say. Really dark and creamy.
