Hey Guys,
Thanks for the very helpful posts on synthetic reeds, especially Dionys. I had another question buzzing around in my head recently. I’m curious, why did you guys start to play the Uilleann pipes, and why do you continue to play them now? They’re not the easiest instrument, nor the cheapest, but I can’t picture the world without them. I’d like to hear what you think.
I’m french, I played “breton music” and I have no reason to play pipes…
But Listen to Paddy keenan and you will have the response to your question… It sound so wounderfully and it 's so an art to play it
LIke say others It’s an AMAZING instrument
I took up the pipes because I refused to join the legion of those damned fiddlers.where I live there’s a strong old time/hillbilly fiddle tribe and all the music played here is either old time or scot/irish with a strong twangy old-timey
fiddle backbone. I still love the dirty looks
when I open my case. this group had never even heard of the tune “merrily kiss the quaker” scary ain’t it…
Uilleann pipes are part of my ancestry that has, over time, faded away. I am half Irish (my grandfather immigrated to the states from Co. Cork) and just feel so good and warm when I hear them.
I’m a singer/composer/lyricist and I want to incorporate the Uilleann pipes in my music, to show the world who I am and where I come from.
