First let me say that nobody appreciates a good hat like the balding.
I got a plain black tam a while ago at Carson’s or somewhere like that.
I have been looking for a nce tam hat for a couple weeks now (not very hard). All the mall stores seem to be sold out of them and I had a hard time finding anything on the net.
Here’s the weird part.
I keep seeing old men around here with the best tams. I was in the drive thru at McDonald’s and while I’m at window #2 I can see the counter inside and there was this old guy with the coolest green and blue one I’d ever seen.
Then at church this morning while we were getting into the car, I saw another older gentleman with a nice grey one. I almost got out of the car and knocked on his window to ask him where he got his hat, but I didn’t have the nerve.
I told my wife there is some secret society like the free masons where all the old guys are buying up all these hats (not that anyone else would want them)
THEY all seem to know where they are (men and old men in particular are not especially known for being good shoppers)
Maybe I should be asking their wives where they get them.
Mine thinks it’s funny that I am 30 and I want to look like I’m 60 but I’ve had this black one and I wear it ALL the time.
And why is it that people under the age of 50 don’t appreciate these more? I think baseball caps are over rated and our culture has suffered since hat wearing went out of style. Used to be every guy had to have a fidora or something.
I suppose it would be easier and cheaper to have hair, but for at least 3 generations we’ve needed hats.
That’s it
I’m done

It looks like I’m the only one who can access the picture because you have to sign in to my storage page to access it…what a hassle! I have more trouble with pictures, it never goes right.
I wouldn’t wear that on a bet! no, it’s not like that!
People’d be coming up and grabing that ball on the top of your head… come on.

Every tam I’ve ever seen had a ball on top… maybe you’re looking for an ivy cap instead.
I wear ivy caps myself, and people tell me they are “old man caps” all the time.
I wouldn’t be caught dead in a tam either, but to each his own I suppose!

I’m glad you called these an ‘ivy cap’. I’ve been looking for one since I went to the Dickens on the Strand this year. Someone told me they were called a “donegal cap”, but all the caps I could find on the net called that were in the $35-70 range. Maybe now I’ll be able to expand my search and find more economical options.
Oh YEAH! I’ve got one of those ivy caps, waterproof, navy blue, that I got in a snooty tack shop (non-western equestrian gear and clothing).
I went to Google’s new site that searches for retail goods-- http://www.froogle.com – and typed “ivy cap” without the quotation marks (but if you use them, it will search for that exact phrase) and found some lovely ones. A bit pricy, I thought, but charming.
Won’t keep my ears warm, though.

Now see, the few things I saw on the net were calling these tams. If they’re Ivy Caps that’s just as well. (Turning red because I feel like I don’t know what I’m talking about) the picture you posted (the one without the tassle) is what I’m talking about. I thought the ones with the tassles were “golf hats” then there are the 8/4 hats that look like “news boys”
I’ll check out London Fog for my “old man hat” thanks!
That tam in the picture–it’s the most
beautiful thing I’ve ever seen!
Very beautiful "ivy’ caps
can be found in Irish import
stores, which abound in most
cities e.g. chicago, st. louis,
etc. these are a gorgeous
tweed, of which there are
many varieties. These irish
caps are called Donegal caps,
I think.
