I’m looking at getting a home recording set up to try and capture the joys of music and alcoholic haze(optional) in all its jaded glory ( relatively cheaply!). I also hope to use it to record a few people for posterity. (Yep, I have a minidisc player but I wish to be able to use pro mics and would prefer to be able to mix stuff at home).
I’m drawn to the Fostex Vf80 8-track Hard disk recorder. It almost looks too good to be true! Has anyone had any experiance of such a contrivance, or anything by the same company?

Harry, it seems to have been returned by folks on the newsgroup rec.audio.pro . That would be a good place to ask, or on alt.music.4-track . Another unit that comes up is a similar unit from Boss, and possible preference for the Tascam Portastudio 788.

I just checked that out with a few people and they are of the opinion that the extra expense for the Tascam might well be justified. It seems the Fostex caters for the ‘cheap and cheerful’ market and that the difference is in the quality of the components, effects, and a whole lot of other minutae well above my analogue processor.
