I have had whistles since first meeting them in the mid to late 1970s, including my favorite Generation Bb (red… er… pink cap - it’s pretty ‘weathered’), my lumpy little Gen high G (accident? adventure? drunken nights at fiddle festivals?.. who can recall?), a nice old Gen F, and a pair of Camacs, lower G and A, …
… then, after getting back into playing here this last year or so, a replacement for my lost Gen D (a newer, and less worthy Gen D), and last year I got a Doug Tipple pvc flute (I love it)… then I added a Howard low D (bought from someone here) which I like very much, …then I get a Walton D and C… not thrilled till I got the fipples loose so they could be fine tuned… then a pair of C and D Clark Sweetones, which I like,
… then I managed to get on two tours for whistles that I fell in love with… and acquired one of (the O’Brien D, with three additional bodies to come in Bb, C, and Eb)… and now I meet my first Susato… the F… oh my… it is a lovely sounding little thing… so much different from my Gen f… so …It’s on hold while I squeeze piggybanks and check sofa cracks… sigh…
I think it’s got me…
It’s often frustrating to be poor, but I tell ya what… it’s also a very good thing (though it’s getting to me that each time I gather the money to have Jerry tweek some, one of the major appliances or a vehicle has a coronary!!)… if I had real ‘discretionary’ income I’d be in danger of psychopathetic collecting, LOL!
But you have a gift that the well-to-do whistle collectors can’t buy. The gift of true appreciation for each whistle that you’ve saved for. I often wonder if I’d be better off picking one high D and a copy of O’Neils Music of Ireland and focus fully on that. I’m too weak to try though!

Yeah, it’s also lucky that we can get some pretty good whistles for little money compared to most other instruments. Of course, this just feeds our Whoa, though!
PS Sir Nick, I’m with you on that one. We’d be some fearsome musicians if we did that!

LOL… ain’t it da truth?!.. my DH met a guitar yesterday that was ‘vibing’ him… KWIM (…take me home… please… take me home… you know you want me… you know I was made just for you… you know we could make beautiful music together… psst… hey… no… NO… don’t leave meeeeeeeeee!..) (It took him 5 minutes to actually let go of it after he put it back on the rack! No joke!)… alas for him, it’s at $800something, while my sweet little F whistle is only going to put me out about $25… heehee
That’s not bad. The guitar that’s calling to me all the way from Austin (via Palo Alto) is over $3200. I could get a pretty good supply of whistles for that.
I definatly feel that pain…with playing both whistle and fiddle, and in a rather constricting finantial state at the moment (college), i definatly feel the pain. I wonder how many whistles i could buy for the amound that im going to have to spend on my next fiddle…that could be whistle heaven.
Oooooo…right. Didn’t think of that one. Although I’m not too keen on having the trash laying about. Maybe I’ll toss the gas bill. We can all just wear lots of coats and sweaters and stuff. It doesn’t get THAT cold here in Ohio anyway…
Hmmm, maybe here in sunny southern Ohio I could get by with that … not sure about east central. Isn’t that in the snow belt?

I’m trying the “make-it-yourself” cure at the moment. It’s ‘kinda’ working (and the whistle is actually decent) … until I save up the money for a Dixon 3-piece flute. Is that FlOA?

Heather, if a Thin Weasel pvc soprano D or a Silkstone D is on your “want to try” list, I have one each that you could borrow for ‘testing’. They are both nice whistles, but it’s just not ones I reach for first (2nd or 3rd). Honestly, if I had been able to try them before buying, I’m not sure I would have bought either of them. They both take some getting use to.
