quiet whistle volume comparison

I have read previous discussions on quiet whistles, but none that I found specifically answer my question:
What is the relative volume of the Hoover narrow-bore brass, the Burke narrow-bore brass, and the Clarke traditional whistle (this is my point of reference.)
Thanks,
Micah

Hi Micah. I cannot help you with the Burke narrow bore, but I have both the Clarke and the Hoover D & C in the brass narrow bore. The Clarke tone cannot be compared to the Hoovers at all. It is breathy and woodsy while the Hoover’s are sweet and mellow flute like. The Hoover is way quieter than the Clarke. It is for those times when you would rather not be heard, ie. by the neighbours etc. I would say that the Clarke is at least double, if not triple the volume of the Hoovers. Hope this helps!

I was going to say almost EXACTLY what Cheryl said. I have both the Hoover narrow bore D and the Clarke…no Burke…yet. The Hoover has such tiny wind requirements that it causes you to have to exhale before you take a breath due to CO2 build up in your lungs. I often let air out of the corners of my mouth while I’m playing it. The volume is very low, but the tone is incredibley bell-like. It’s more challenging to play than the Clarke, but WELL worth the extra effort.

Good luck,
Eric
