They are rye chips. You can google them. I think Gardetto’s makes one brand, and you can get others through Amazon (case of 12 7 oz. bags for 30 dollars).
But real Chex mix doesn’t have rye chips. It has rice chex, wheat chex, corn chex, Cheerios, and cashews, plus the optional pretzels. At least, my grandma’s had that.
Here’s a microwave recipe so you can make your own –
1/4 c butter or margarine
1 1/4 t seasoned salt
4 1/2 t Worcestershire sauce
8 c assorted Chex cereal and cheerios (2 cups each)
1 c mixed nuts (Cashews are better)
1 c pretzels (optional)
In a small microwave-safe bowl melt margarine on HIGH. Add seasoned
salt and Worcestershire sauce; mix well. Pour cereal(s), nuts and
pretzels into 2-gal. resealable plastic bag. Pour margarine mixture
over cereal mixture. Seal top of bag and shake until pieces are
evenly coated. Pour contents of bag into large microwave-safe bowl.
Microwave on HIGH 5-6 minutes, stirring every 2 minutes. Spread on
absorbent paper to cool. Store in airtight container.
I like mine extra greasy, so I double the seasoned butter goop. You can forget the plastic bag and just stir it in the bowl if you want. And one more thing – Lay a paper towel over the margarine while you’re melting it so it doesn’t pop all over the microwave.
I’ve gotten that kind of comment from a lot of people when they find out I like them, then FFF called my liking them a “fetish” so that’s why I thought I wasn’t normal for liking them. Haha.
When I eat Gardetto’s, I dump the bag onto the desk (laying down a protective shield of copier paper first), then I separate them into their component parts.
First I eat the pretzels.
Then I eat the skinny bread stick things.
Then I eat the fat, sesame covered bread stick things.
And finally, I finish it off with the rye chips.
It’s climactic; it’s kind of like a micro-metaphor of edible sex.
And while we’re on the subject of compulsiveness, in what order do you eat your M & Ms?
I don’t separate the M&Ms. I like to eat the chocolate off around the edge of Reece’s cups before eating the middle. I also eat the chocolate around a 3 musketeer’s bar before eating the creamy nuget.
I HATE blue M&Ms. It is a travesty that light brown–my all time favorite–was displaced in favor of blue. Normally, therefore, I eat the blue first to get them out of my sight. If there still were light browns, I’d save them for last. As it is I must settle for dark brown.
When I was little (like 4 or 5) I used to think the M&Ms were the same color inside as out - yellow ones had yellow chocolate, red ones had red chocolate, etc. I was rather disappointed when I bit one of every color in half and saw it was brown chocolate inside each one. I used to line them up and eat whichever color had the most first. Now it’s just one at a time in no particular order.
If you’re ever in Las Vegas, you should stop at the M&M store (next to
the MGM Grand). The second floor of the store has serve yourself
tubes, each tube containing only ONE color, so you could make
yourself a bag of only, say, greens. I think they even had light browns
still, because they were using it in some other mix … one of the Star
Wars special packs, I think… Oh, and they have introduced Mega
M&M’s and Dark Chocolate M&M’s now, as well, though I’m not sure
which geographical markets they’ve have them yet.
