Question on message threading?

Is there any way to view a topic in threaded mode? The normal view of a thread just shows the messages in chronological order, and it can be hard to know which message someone is replying to if they don’t quote part of the earlier message.

Thanks,
Bob

Since the ‘Post Reply’ button is at the bottom of the whole list of messages, rather than on each post individually, I don’t think there’s a way to tie a new reply to a particular post under the topic.

The only way I know is to quote it as in this message.

As I understand norseman’s question, he’d like to be able to display a message in the way that is seen on some other boards with threads broken in to subthreads depending on where you hit ‘reply’. I’m not sure, but I imagine that’s a function of the basic board software, not of the board layout.

FWIW, I never liked that way much (earlier iterations of C&F were laid out in just that way). Its admittedly good for following individual thoughts and for persons who are hung up on order, but I always found it to be disjointed.

Yes Chuck, that’s what I was referring to. I didn’t think it was really possible here, but I thought I’d ask to make sure. Most of the time I can tell by context which message someone is replying to, but not always. It seems most of the time if replying to the latest message, no quoting is done.

I guess my preference for a threaded view is a software engineering occupational hazard.

Bob

I dont like message threading
because it can emphasise how ignored
someone might be.

… did you say something Tal?

Sorry man, I just couldn’t let a jem of a straight line get away from me.

Look at it as a good opportunity to develop your non-linear side. There are certain advantages to being able to think in a less rigid fashion. Let the thoughts surround you!

Let them be free to interact and associate as they will! That’s what I do. You’d be amazed at what wonderful things result!

LC, you are forbidden from revealing these arcane secrets!

Never forbid anyone from doing anything… it’ll pretty much ensure that they will do it. I speak from experience.
