I’ve been playing around with the fife tunes such as “The Girl I Left Behind Me” And when I play along with the cd his whistle sounds much higher pitched than my D. Is it just me or is he playing a higher pitched whistle in these songs? Maybe its just my cd player versus the room( you know how area affects sound quality)..Anyone else think this or are my ears just out of whack?
As I recall, there is a section of Bill’s book that is all in the upper octave. There is some kind of marker that so indicates, even though the notation for those specific tunes is in the ‘regular octave’ for ease of reading. (I’m at the office–lunch hour, by the way–and cannot verify that recollection, but I think I’m right.)

I am soooo stupid I amaze myself…You are right it is marked to play in the 3rd octave with a little 8va..It would help if I would read things through once in awhile..I drive my dh crazy because I always read my magazines from back to front… :roll: BTW Thanks alot
Usually the marker will be a little “8” on top of the treble clef sign. That means “play an octave up.” Strictly speaking, all written whistle music should sport this “8,” because the whistle actually plays an octave higher than written on the treble clef, but I guess most publishers either assume we already know that

C4: Does his whistle sound like he’s playing an octave above you (i.e., higher, but more or less in tune with what you’re playing), or does it sound like your whistle and his might be out of tune with each other? Either is a possibility. When I play with a tape or CD, I often have to either use one of my tuneables or choose different whistles until I find one that’s more or less in tune with the one on the recording. If it sounds like they’re more or less in tune with each other but he’s playing an octave up, you have two choices…ignore the difference (if you can get all the notes in playing an octave down), or play up.

thanks for the help. I got this all under control now…Redwolf my whistle is in tune with his just an octave to low…
