Question About Playing "Level Plain"

I like the tune “Level Plain” very much. Can I play “Level Plain” in public and record the tune in CD? If the answaer is “no”, how can I get the right to play this tune and record this tune?

Thanks,
KC

Assuming you mean the air recorded by Joanie Madden and Eileen Ivers, the Fiddler’s Companion says:

MAGH SEOLA. Irish, Air. Composed by uilleann piper Gerard Fahy from Ballinkill, who named it after the site of an ancient battle in the west of Ireland.

Gerard has a website, so for performance and/or recording permission you could probably contact him there:

http://www.gerardfahy.nl/

I don’t know the details, not being a prefessional musician myself, but there exists a way to play copyrighted music by paying a flat fee to “someone” who then distributes the money to the various copyright holders. It is my understanding that the flat fees are not collected based on what pieces you play; rather, the fee is divided up by some formula based on air play of all the tunes in the world or something like that. Perhaps one of our professionals can enlighten us all?

Thanks for the information.

Anyone here knows which Association I can contact to pay the “flat” fee.

Couple year ago, several friends played at a cafe shop for copyright songs. That cafe shop did not have the license then one day a person from a “musician/composer” association showed up to tell the shop owner to stop or pay. I don’t remember the name of the Association.

When I played in a restaurant 30 or so years ago, the owner had to deal with CAPAC, the Canadian version of ASCAP, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. They have a website:
http://www.ascap.com

Try the Harry Fox agency. I have made two whistle CDs and those guys are the best resource I know in paying for mechanical licensing.
