When playing the tin whistle, do you articulate notes by tonguing like on a trumpet or clarinet or what? I am a homeschool mom who played trumpet and french horn and am trying to teach my child to play the tin whistle.
Also, how can I keep the whistle from squeaking so much. Any suggestions would be helpful! Thanks!
Yes and no… some folks tongue quite a lot and some slur everything (with finger articulation aka ornamentation used by both schools), but it’s very rarely idiomatic to tongue everything. That said, I’d personally still teach a beginner to tongue first for the control and coordination.

While I’d think you should be OK teaching basic fingering and tonguing, I’d also suggest you need to learn a bit more yourself if you’re hoping to take things any further re. idiom etc.

Appropriate breath control and finger placement… that’s all!
Thanks! I am a member of Classical Conversations. We use the tin whistle to teach music theory. This is our first year in the program. I would love to learn more about playing since it is such a sweet sound.
I’ll second the comment on finger placement. When I get those gawd-awuful squeaks, it’s usually due to incomplete hole closure. It’s amazing how such a tiny crack can yield a squeak !
Something those of us who suffer from lactose intolerance say also.
