Here’s a question for performing pipers:
I play pipes and accordion in a band. During concerts, I often use a bar stool to be on level with my standing bandmates. Altering between pipes and box, I have to put away my full set several times during a performance. This has always been a problem for me. If I put them in or onto the pipe case lying on the stage floor I have to get up from my stool and bow down, sometimes hitting a microphone stand in front of me (ouch). Lately, I have started using an X-shaped keyboard stand. This works better. Still I am not satisfied - the risk of the pipes falling down is high. Plus, the device takes a lot of space, which makes it difficult to use in small venues. What’s your solution when you are on stage and have to strap off in order to change instruments?
The answer is obvious–stop playing the accordion. ![]()
Perhaps you can put together a gig-bag/soft case that you can use in conjunction with the keyboard stand, to make the pipes a bit more secure on the stand and prevent total disaster if the stand falls over. Or you can switch to a smaller accordion, and just leave the pipes in your lap.

Sounds like a small borrowed end table or an additional chair is in order.
I use a guitar stand. I cut a piece of leather and stitched some loops for a “hammock” that supports the stock end. this slides over the cradles at the bottom. A strap to secure the pipes to the stand wraps around from the top. Makes for a small footprint and folds to fit in my pipe case. The stand is made by Fretrest and I got it at Guitar Center for about $20.

@Aaron: That’s a nice one. But I suppose it wouldn’t work well on a traditional full set, due to the bass reg bar…
@No E: The only box-like instruments that are playable with the pipes still on are harmonica and melodica. Btw: Has anybody ever tried to plug a melodica hose into the chanter stock of the bag?

Works
with a 3/4, dont know if it will do with a Fullset.

actually we structure the sets so I (& all of us in fact) have time to switch instruments.
If several of us need to change simultaneously, then the vocalist does some patter, intros, etc.
i play the uilleann pipes + accordion + bodhran + flutes-n-whistles + guitar + upright bass, etc… so i get the need for a fast change.. my band does it mid-set with me switching instruments to change up the groove/sound… i keep my pipe case (a viola case) either right next to my seat or right behind with a bunch of chanters and the flutes and whistles et al sitting in it… sometimes even the bodran sitting in it, so all i have to do is turn at the waist and put it behind/beside me in the case to grab the box/guitar/drum etc… whatever…
upright is back behind the line up on a stand, so to play it yes, all are set in their respective case/s so i can get up and move back… but just have your case sitting next to you should work.. worst case (no pun) i have just set the pipes in front of me at front of stage on the floor… its a full set so there’s no missing it sitting there for a few tunes on the box or whatever.
good luck

First of all: Good one to NoE…(s)
And the Guitar sling looks really clever. Our fiddle player has a similar rig.
(Might try to figure a way to raise it up off the floor a bit, but Great idea!)
Not accordion, but for many years I’ve switched between uilleann pipes and smallpipes or flute or bodhran, and I do the thing somebody said above, keeping my pipecase on the ground right beside my chair and laying the pipes on that. It’s a semi-rigid foamcore case covered with cloth so it’s not a hard surface that I’m putting the pipes on.
Gads! Cannot your servant hand the relevant instrument to you when needed!
Suitably tuned of course!
The old ways are best, I feel.

I keep my case on stage too – it’s also good for catching flutes and whistles.
As for the rest of the band they can stand up, sit on stools, whatever – I’m on my chair and as long as they keep their big feet out of my pipecase I’m happy.
