I have moderate carpal tunnel in the right wrist and mild CT in the left.
It has been under control for years since I had physical therapy.
Then came along my infactuation for the flute. My left thumb screams
in pain after a few minutes of flute playing. This thumb never hurts
during any other activity. I assume it is due to the CT in the wrist.
Anyway, what is supposed to be the proper postion of the left thumb in respect to the hand and the flute ?
I’m sorry for your injury. With some care and creativity, it should be possible for you to enjoy the flute without pain.
Search the Web for “Rockstro hold” or “Rockstro grip”. Basically, the left thumb doesn’t have to support the flute. On a keyed flute, it’s supposed to “float” free to operate the Bb key. So players developed a way to keep the flute stable using a lever concept, where the flute is balanced on the lip, the side of the first finger of the left hand and the right thumb.

Another thing that may help is taking posture lessons from someone who knows the Alexander method. Google for it too.
